Angry Careful, There's a Lawyer about

Heard today that some ****ing lawyer, (and it would have to be a ****ing lawyer, wouldn't it - for lawyer, read parasite) sued an internet company for damages after he was allegedly 'libeled' on their web site.

He settled, surprise surprise, out of court for £15,000 plus legal costs of £235,000!!!? Wanna bet that he represented himself?

Give me a ****ing break!! Does everything that happens in the bloody USA HAVE to happen here in the UK. Surely we can avoid inheriting some of their stupider habits, like having more lawyers than they can kill in one sitting.

I believe it was Shakespeare who first pointed out that: 'if you want justice, first kill all the lawyers'. Sounds like good advice to me.

Anyway, I guess that a precedent has been set by a headcase with a law degree and a chip on his shoulder, so I guess we can expect the moderators to get ever so slightly more careful about what we can post. Let's be careful out there.

Red face

Case was settled out of court. The plaintiff has sued 4 other companies. Issue was posting on a usenet newsgroup which is not the same as PPRuNe. PPRuNe is based offshore too so all sorts of problems with jurisdiction and besides all that we try to run a tight ship here. Occasionally something slips through but we try to correct it as soon as its pointed out. Also, in this case, the reason for the action was that someone was impersonating the doctor and defaming his reputation, which is a no no on PPRuNe

No precedent set but there is one sad individual who is trying his best to get PPRuNe closed down. Currently banned from here for being an irritant but then I suppose this post will just serve to infuriate him even more. Can't say more for now but will move this thread to the Non-Aviation Issues forum.

Cool

Err, he was actually a Doctor. Seemingly the ISP involved had been warned on numerous occasions to remove the offending material but just ignored this guys complaints, helps to know all the facts Vmike, or at least some of them!

Fair enough Meeb, but £15,000 plus £235,000 costs? C'mon.

Unhappy

For the record, Dr. Godfrey is, according to my newspaper, a scientist, not an MD

A physist no less, and not his first time in court. Incidentally, most of the press reports said that this could not happen in the states, where ISP's are apparently not liable for postings on newsgroups. Demon Internet (for it was they) are trying to get the law changed, which is a good thing.
I wonder what they talk about when they are discussing the political and social system in Thailand?
The word "litigious" springs to mind, don't know why.
