This is not a ghost story, because the hero is still with us. A friend of mine, Leutnant X, flew the 109 (I am sure everyone is right and it is indeed Bf 109; but all my youth right through the war it was the Me 109)from France to the UK often on PR sorties. After one trip over Plymouth he returned to base, changed, and went to the mess, where the radio was tuned to BBC. X was just in time to hear: "...And good day to you, Leutnant X! Here at the BBC and the RAF we are glad you made it home safely. Did you enjoy your trip to Plymouth as much as we enjoyed having you? We are sorry our reception committee was just a little late to greet you. Don't worry, though. They'll be waiting for you next time."

So a 109 could have been shot down over the UK. Leutnant X (now a barrister and solicitor) says it was a chilling experience ......almost as bad as the time he found himself No 3 downwind to finals, and then realised that Nos 1 and 2 were Mustangs .....waiting for him. He got out of there in a hurry.

Well, I just had to read up on the 'Bf' vs 'Me' question, and here is the answer.

It seems the prefix 'Bf' is in fact the correct one. Professor Willy Messerschmitt worked for Bayerische Flugzeugwerke ('Bf' for short), and all models of the 109 and 110 are correctly known as Bf-109 or Bf-110. Later Messerschmitt designs did have the official prefix of 'Me', such as the Me-262.

During the war the RAF referred to these models as 'Me-109 and Me-110', and a lot of books published soon after the war continued to use this incorrect prefix.

Question

Just to re-open this thread -- does anyone know about the supposed ghost of a Polish spitfire pilot that crashed into one of the accomodation blocks at RAF Northolt during the war? It's just that I happen to have stayed in said block and later told the story, and yes, my stay was rather spooky.

The spook at Lindholme is known as "Lindholme Willie" ( sounds painful) try a Google search.

The former Officer's Mess at Middleton St George is now a hotel (I think) at what is now Teeside airport and is supposed to be haunted also.

In my time in the Mob I saw lots of Shimmering Airmen but their official title was Station Warrant Officer <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

I know this thread is getting old know but I just feel I have to add to it.

I am currently doing a bit of work at a firm based in a Building where Guy Gibson and his collegues used to hang out. Yes indeed, it was an officer's mess. The building is a large Town house, probably Georgian. Anyway, I got yarning to the senior partner of the Solicitor's practice that is based in this building and he told me that when he stayed in the building late some evenings he heard footsteps running up and down the main staircase, doors being slammed and faint voices. Now I must point out that he told me that this was around 2300 when everyone had gone home, and the place is up to it's eyeballs in security, being a Sols office. The central staircase is reputed to be haunted by an officer in R.A.F. uniform, and a "presence" has been felt by many staff.

My Grandfather used to be a security guard at Hendon museum. He left because of the "atmosphere". He told me that one night on his night watch he was passing through a section of the building where they had a tatty old British fighter (I think it was a Hurricane) standing static. He casually shone his torch on the aircraft and did a double take. There was a figure of a Pilot in WWII garb sitting in the cockpit.He said that he thought it was a prankster and shouted to the culprit to give himself up. Shortly afterwards the apparition disappeared.

Not very hair raising by today's standards but I thinks these stories get lost some what in my translation. My Grandfather would not talk about his supernatural experiences for years and he is not a man to mince words! Anyway I'll shut up now.

The Tristar that had the bits(i.e the galley) from flight 401,ended up flying for Cathay for some years.The local chinese had heard about the ghosts,and so got the local FUNG SHUI dude on the job,he did some kind of exorcism on the aircraft and no sighting were reported again.
