US Dollars

I am travelling to NYC for a week in January. I have never been to the US before, can anyone offer advice on the US dollar? I have been told the rate is very good at the minute against the pound...is this true? Any recommendations of decent financial websites where I can do some research would be gratefully received.

Cheers

It's about $1.85 at the momernt which is pretty good - last time I went (about 18 months ago) it was about $1.40ish...

Time was you got $4 to the pound - well before my time sadly!

Don't worry too much about the weakness of the dollar. In NYC in January you will be too cold to spend money!

Don't pay the rip-off charges at the money changers. Just use your bankcard at one of the many ATMs. A much better rate and you can withdraw up to the limit on your card.

Lou-by the way, you should be able to find a few Irish pubs near 45th and Madison Ave, about 20 minutes south of Central Park, if you like them and don't mind a cold beer, if served US style.

Chatted with two Canadian guys with Cathay Pacific in one, along with a Scottish guy. The Scottish guy (game designer...in a world of their own?) asked why I wore "those stupid" semi-Bermuda shorts. Being July, I told him that down South they are the only way to cool off in the summer. Maybe long pants and a huge bonfire always best near wetter parts of North Sea, chanting "Up Helly Ah" and praying to (W)Oden or Thor?

About where do you guys stay? We rarely get to stay in Manhattan and not very long, except maybe some crews on Airbus or larger. Many go way, way out to Morristown, NJ.

Phil, how long is a piece of string? If i knew the answer to exchange rate fluctuations in advance I could make a fortune.

Rates on cards are not too painful anf you only spend what you need - rather than laying out in advance and then possibly having to get a refund (at a lousy rate) on your return.

Certainly take some pocket money with you to get started - like buying drinks on United.
