So on the first 2 years you will be a cruise captain or junior captain on longhaul flights until you are full rated (class A, d or whatever the name is). You may or may not log the time as PIC. But after 2 years or when they conduct the final line check and paired with a junior captain you will be able to log it as PIC. And you will have to sign every logbook. So basicaly is a good gig if you plan to stay 4 to 5 years, not just 2 years.

As a junior captain are you able to fly domestic flights with other FO? Or you need to be full captain?

Woodja may wish to confirm this... my understanding is that the CSA Expats captains do not have their log books signed by the other Captain, in fact the Expat captain often signs the FOs' logbook.

ELAC, Air China is obviously less progressive than CSA.

The instructions as to who records what as P1 time on type on augmented or heavy crewed flights varies a little from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. What all jurisdictions agree on is that the PIC may record the entire duration of the flight regardless of what seat they do or do not occupy. Where the various disagreements often occur is what does a Captain log who is not the PIC. There is only one PIC. Most jurisdictions agree that a Capt, who is not the PIC, may log P1 when occupying a control seat in the absence of the PIC. Even here the boundaries may get blurred a little at times.

Keeping a personal log book is a little like keeping your score card at golf. If you play a round on your own, and have 84 off the stick but record that on your score card as a 72 - then you do no one any harm per se, as you are only fooling yourself. If you later pull that card out in the clubhouse and tell everyone you had a 72, and have the score card to prove it ......... now that's a different matter. :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Guys,
Someone already flying for CSA can say how really those foreign bases works ?
You can only be assigned to a base where your equipment flies to or you can go dead-head to your base (as KAL) ?
Is there any line or waiting list to be assigned for a foreign base ?

I would think that the Air China Chinese Captain signing your log book at the end of every flight may suggest otherwise.

You are clearly an intelligent individual and I totally agree with your advice about 'Keeping one's guard up because stuff happens', which is required anywhere in the quagmire of aviation.

I hate to drag out what is becoming an overly long and redundant debate, but just so it's clear for Mastema:

The Chinese carriers I'm familiar with publish a document referred to as a "mission certificate" for each planned operation. The mission certificate lists, among other things, the assigned duties for each crew-member. If you are the designated PIC you know it, and so does everybody else. If you're not, the same goes.

The signing of logbooks is more of a formality than anything else. I have frequently signed the logbooks of training and CAAC check captains who were the designated PIC's on flights I've done with them.

Medical Exam
 
Guys,

I am 2 weeks before boarding to China for a screening and just found out during a medical check-up that I have gall-bladder calculus. The solution would be to remove the gall-bladder in a surgery but I don't have enough time for it. My question is: if I pass trough a medical exam in China and they find those calculus will I get a failure on my whole medical exam or this specific exam (gall-bladder) would be pending and then I can do the surgery and to this exam again?
Any idea ?

Seems like you answered your own question as your limited time might require you to attend medical screening. IMO go do medical check and if they catch it historically you can then have surgery and have your doctor send the satisfactory results to agency and airline. Good luck

CSA don't do CCQ 320 to 330 if Parc telling you that they need to check their facts.
Also you need some exp.hrs 330 to get a look in.
Check with other agencies you will find out,

Isn't this effectively Adverising a CCQ albeit a full conversion course.
Air China ads actually say 320/340 CCQ to 330. What am I missing

Just a quick question!
Does anyone have any answers for me regarding the CSA Medical? Specifically the color vision. I am mildly color blind and I'm just wondering if I should bother going thru the whole application interview process if they are just going to shoot me down.
Any thoughts?

If you can pass a standard color blind test, follow the line and can tell what number or shape it is, then you should be fine.

That is the problem being mildly color blind. Can't see all the numbers. Passed the lantern and Farnsworth (sp) tho.

Just got back from CAN and Zhuhai after completing the CAAC check ride.

There is NO foreseeable additional spots for any 787 positions. Your agencies may be telling you there are but there are not.

The only positions to be filled now are 777 positions all out of CAN base.

They have recruited about 72 out of the 200 total foreign pilots they require.

The only rosters are 45on/15off or a 20on/10off both CAN base.

I started the process in October and only about 3 in my group of 30 made it through with the major killers being the initial sim eval and the medical.

It is indeed a great opportunity for those willing to move or willing to commute (in economy) to CAN.

Progressive and friendly company but it is no longer the advertised foreign based positions originally that drew so many of us.

Did they tell you that the foreign bases were not longer going to be planned, or that for now you have to start in CAN?

That would definitely be a deal breaker for many.

How was the CAAC check? Did you pass?

If so, what are you going to do?

Did they make you sign the contract after the check? Any joining dates?

I was told for the Boeing guys the option is the 777 now which is only CAN base.

Airbus guys are still able to do reverse roster out of Australia ( a huge plus)

I even asked about lax and the 777 not happening.

I started the process because of the 787 YVR base - but as mentioned all recruitment for the 787 is on hold for the "foreseeable future" no bases currently exist.

I did pass the CAAC check.

For those of you who did the initial screening ride it's basically exactly the same. SE raw data ILS and lots of emphasis on visual circuits and hand flown NDBs etc... Multiple checklists and Non Norm items.

My agency will be supplying me a contract and the airline asked when could I start.

I will have to look at it all closely but the commute to CAN is not overly attractive.

We were always told that the reverse roster would only happen if they gather about 8 CPT's that wanted to be based somewhere where the B777 flies to (AMS, FRA,...)

We'll see what the contract says,...

Don't forget the $22,000 training bond that most agencies require (Parc and Rishworth), definitely a deal breaker for me. Bond contract has no guarantees concerning unsatisfactory sim, medical or general incident deemed unworthy by CSA. Good people and company but NO refunds...:bored:

Seems CSA has invited candidates to CAN in the coming months for screening on the B777. I know there has been some discussion here about the B777 and the foreign bases. Was the carrot dangled about a home base and then subsequently offered CAN. How is this roster for commuting and can CSA reverse schedule you to a home base? I'm sure the B777 is used ULH so possibly the commute to AUS or US possible? Any input from anyone would be helpful for those being screened in the coming months. Cheers.

About the 20/10 roster pattern, could you add vacation to that in a monthly basis? 10 days off (assuming you will commute on your time is 8 days at home) is just not enough...! How many vacation days, what's the perdiem? Sorry if this was covered already

Hi Dominican,

I remember you from the ANA forum. I hope you're doing OK on that B767 commuting contract.

From the draft contract that I have, the 20-10 option has 10 days of annual and sick leave combined.

The thing is that, allegedly, if they offer you a besa at home (FRA, AMS, LHR,...), you would not have to commute all the way from Asia to home, but just a short commute from your European / American base to your home, not to mention that in between duties, you will also be at that "base", so you would get extra days at home.

No per diems other than the $13,020 salary for the 20/10 based on 60 hours and over time at $217 per hour after 60. Also a $6,000 bonus per year. That's all.

I dont believe there are any awarded vacation days on the 20/10 rotation.

schedules on the 777 are only issued at 5 days at a time and you seem to be on hot standby when you get back from a rotation - its all a little murky and undefined right now and Im even having some trouble getting some clear answers - the management is however committed to improving things.

You can be sure though that you will be guaranteed your 10days off a month.

Guys, I am unable to find reliable information as to whether the 320 to 330 CCQ hiring/conversion is actually in place and is/has it worked out for anybody.

It is still widely advertised by our beloved contracting companies, all happy to take my signature and exclusive rights to hire. Unfortunately they are generally the last ones whose information I find accurate.

I'd also like to hear from anybody on the 330 reverse schedule out of SYD or BNE as to general life on the roster.


Anyone know of anything here? Thanks in advance.
