Very interesting post. It's good to see someone tell it how it is. I worked for Vietnam airlines in Hanoi for a short period and it's very similar to what you've just described. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. It was bad and they were morons that you couldn't work with on so many levels. I think it's important that pilots thinking of going to these countries have information like this presented to them so at the very least they can make better decisions about a potential move?
Agency's will not tell you the real truth. They want your money. In a lot of cases they probably don't know? They don't do the job or have to live there.
For the same reasons that you have mentioned I would also have to advise anyone thinking of going to Vietnam, in particular to Hanoi and on the B777 fleet to give it a very wide berth.

If you have kids TAS is one of the best schools in all of Asia :ok: Not cheap though. Pu Tai down in Nantou has an awesome campus as well ( Chung Tai Chan Monastery ).

China Airlines needs to increase their pay. Cost of living is very high in Taiwan. CAL's pay isn't even close to enough to make it worthwhile.

I accept that a lot of pedestrians are confused between China Airlines and Air China.

However, the post here by Thrasher469 is supposed to be an insiders view. To confuse these different national airlines is preposterous for anyone who has flown extensively in Asia. It is unbelievable for a person who supposedly worked for either of them.

Can you imagine if I wrote about Lufthansa in response to a question about British Airways...???

I thought he did a pretty good job of describing how it is in mainland china however? It's not somewhere I personally could ever work having experienced them.
The right to decide and freedom of choice. I'd personally stay away from operators there.
It's not just the job as you know. It's the whole deal. Living there, trying to do something so simple like jump in a taxi and go somewhere. Having to do battle and haggle with everyone you meet, making yourself understood. Trying to walk anywhere. Black sky's and coughing your lungs out. The culture. The way your treated as a foreigner. The list goes on.....
You have no rights in a country like china. If anything ever happens to you, your on your own.
The environment is so alien to us and their way of thinking often defies logic.
Anyone thinking of going to china/Korea/ Vietnam etc should probably be armed with this information.

I dont think China Airlines in Taiwan evens hires expat pilots anymore.

OK - so now that we understand that we are talking about China Airlines on the island of Taiwan. Can someone in the know on recent pay and work rules for expats weigh in? Specifically does anyone know if they are allowing basing options in the states after you get checked out? Or, if not if it is even possible to commute to these jobs with say a two month on schedule followed by your days off plus some of your vacation days.

This confusion is common. "The Economist" magazine did the same thing in March, using a picture of China Airlines of Taiwan when writing an editorial about issues on the mainland - affecting Air China and others. Amusing but confusing to people not fully aware of the politics.

Of course, the Taiwanese assert that they are the real Chinese while the mainland is occupied by pretenders.

Actually not many Taiwanese nowadays think they are the real China anymore. They think of themselves as Taiwanese and the Chinese as Chinese. And do not want to be a part of China anymore.

TAiwan and China are very different places entirely.

no need to get it via agency... they recruit directly by themselves... 10 OFFs in a roll each month, you can manage to use all or 5 and 5 and travel back to your selectable base with name on GD... small bonus as Red Angbao and chinese lunch table wherever you are in Chinese New Year celebration... 13th month salary being paid together with December pay.. and of course, 15% tax... :)

...about tax is not quite correct. Depends on your annual income, your immigration status, your exemptions and deductions.
Tax brackets range from 7 to 41 %. Even being in the 30% tax bracket you may end up paying around 11-15% after all the math is done.
If you do not qualify for a resident status is a 20% flat, no deductions no exemptions....
