China Airlines

Hello,
somebody of you know the conditions for one expat in this company?
Quality of life, salary, if any chance of commuting etc. ...
Thanks

ratpoison 13th Apr 2012 11:04

Excellent post Thrasher. :D

etops777 13th Apr 2012 11:12

Thrasher

The thread starter is referring to China Airlines(CI) out of Taiwan and not Air China (CA) out of the mainland China..

pezetaroi 14th Apr 2012 12:04

wow

Thanks for the excelent post... Certainly puts me to think:confused:

etops777 14th Apr 2012 14:18

Peze

Thrasher was referring to air china based in the mainland china..not Taiwan where China Airlines is based.

Very interesting post. It's good to see someone tell it how it is. I worked for Vietnam airlines in Hanoi for a short period and it's very similar to what you've just described. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. It was bad and they were morons that you couldn't work with on so many levels. I think it's important that pilots thinking of going to these countries have information like this presented to them so at the very least they can make better decisions about a potential move?
Agency's will not tell you the real truth. They want your money. In a lot of cases they probably don't know? They don't do the job or have to live there.
For the same reasons that you have mentioned I would also have to advise anyone thinking of going to Vietnam, in particular to Hanoi and on the B777 fleet to give it a very wide berth.
Very informative, it certainly painted a graphic picture.

typhoonpilot 14th Apr 2012 20:56

Ugh, China Airlines. Just do a Google search!!!!!

Learn the difference between Taiwan and China people!!!!! :ugh:

If you have kids TAS is one of the best schools in all of Asia :ok: Not cheap though. Pu Tai down in Nantou has an awesome campus as well ( Chung Tai Chan Monastery ).

China Airlines needs to increase their pay. Cost of living is very high in Taiwan. CAL's pay isn't even close to enough to make it worthwhile.

Amazing, totally amazing that we have people buying into this drivel by THRASHER469, someone who cannot even distinguish between CHina Airlines and Air China.

Wait, eventually all lies will show up to smack on the face of the perpetrators. Well, if people can buy into the WMD stuff in Iraq and burning kerosene bringing down the twin towers in New Amsterdam, they will believe any **** that is being dished out!

OK, maybe Madonna ( not The Madonna, which can be another point of contention ) and Lady Gaga are still virgins. Sigh!

gerago 15th Apr 2012 00:46

A lot of con artists on the prowl for patsies to buy their yarns. When they cannot con themselves into plum positions, they come out with horror stories maybe to console themselves? Or hoping that no one else show up and then they have to be " begged " to come in again?

HIALS 15th Apr 2012 03:45

Along with the others here - I smell a rat.

I accept that a lot of pedestrians are confused between China Airlines and Air China.

However, the post here by Thrasher469 is supposed to be an insiders view. To confuse these different national airlines is preposterous for anyone who has flown extensively in Asia. It is unbelievable for a person who supposedly worked for either of them.

Can you imagine if I wrote about Lufthansa in response to a question about British Airways...???

Sampan Angkasa 15th Apr 2012 03:52

HIALS...no, I don't think you can confuse LH with BA. You might get mixed up between Lufthansa and Luftwaffe.

But looks like ratpoison had swallowed it up, poison, venom, bs warts and all!

B777-200ER 15th Apr 2012 04:17

Yes, there seems to be a bit of confusion there? It looks like there has been a post attached originally from someone else?
I thought he did a pretty good job of describing how it is in mainland china however? It's not somewhere I personally could ever work having experienced them.
The right to decide and freedom of choice. I'd personally stay away from operators there.
It's not just the job as you know. It's the whole deal. Living there, trying to do something so simple like jump in a taxi and go somewhere. Having to do battle and haggle with everyone you meet, making yourself understood. Trying to walk anywhere. Black sky's and coughing your lungs out. The culture. The way your treated as a foreigner. The list goes on.....
You have no rights in a country like china. If anything ever happens to you, your on your own.
The environment is so alien to us and their way of thinking often defies logic.
Anyone thinking of going to china/Korea/ Vietnam etc should probably be armed with this information.
It is what it is people.

Flying Mechanic 15th Apr 2012 04:34

I dont think China Airlines in Taiwan evens hires expat pilots anymore.

claser111 15th Apr 2012 05:28

Hi guys,
Air China and China Airlines are two different companies, in two different countries, with two different cultures. ;)
China Airlines, a taiwanese company, is still hiring and you can find all the info you need on the their website:

https://calec.china-airlines.com/Pil...endefault.aspx

Safe flights

Skindogg 15th Apr 2012 05:55

Thrashers post was originally posted in the "China hires US pilots" thread, post number 21. So he obviously just cut and pasted it and didn't reference his source!

cloudchaser44 30th Apr 2012 14:42

OK - so now that we understand that we are talking about China Airlines on the island of Taiwan. Can someone in the know on recent pay and work rules for expats weigh in? Specifically does anyone know if they are allowing basing options in the states after you get checked out? Or, if not if it is even possible to commute to these jobs with say a two month on schedule followed by your days off plus some of your vacation days.
Thanks in advance.

POWDERFINGER 3rd May 2012 04:28

This confusion is common. "The Economist" magazine did the same thing in March, using a picture of China Airlines of Taiwan when writing an editorial about issues on the mainland - affecting Air China and others. Amusing but confusing to people not fully aware of the politics.

Of course, the Taiwanese assert that they are the real Chinese while the mainland is occupied by pretenders.

armchairpilot94116 4th May 2012 05:56

Actually not many Taiwanese nowadays think they are the real China anymore. They think of themselves as Taiwanese and the Chinese as Chinese. And do not want to be a part of China anymore.

TAiwan and China are very different places entirely.

silhouette 16th May 2012 05:57

no need to get it via agency... they recruit directly by themselves... 10 OFFs in a roll each month, you can manage to use all or 5 and 5 and travel back to your selectable base with name on GD... small bonus as Red Angbao and chinese lunch table wherever you are in Chinese New Year celebration... 13th month salary being paid together with December pay.. and of course, 15% tax... :)

VONKLUFFEN 16th May 2012 07:39

...about tax is not quite correct. Depends on your annual income, your immigration status, your exemptions and deductions.
Tax brackets range from 7 to 41 %. Even being in the 30% tax bracket you may end up paying around 11-15% after all the math is done.
If you do not qualify for a resident status is a 20% flat, no deductions no exemptions....

JTF 16th May 2012 17:12

I spent a year in Taiwan, but I wasnt flying. 20% tax for the first 6 months and then reducedafterwards. If your rate is under 20% at the end of the year, you will do taxes like in america and get a refund. The key is to be considered living there. Up dont know the requirement for residency. Taipei is not so cheap if you want to live like you did back home and eat and drink like you are used to. If you like Chinese food and don't find it necessary to drink all the time, the costs go way down. School for kids will cost a lot unless they can go native. I'm not sure if they will hire foreigners into Kaohsiung, but it is way cheaper.

Does anybody know what kind of scheduling to expect if you don't want to commute? I personally loved living there and I would hate to whipsaw my bodyclock going back and forth each month.
