Got thar right buskoto! My source indicates they bought fuel somewhere in the vicinity of $80 up for about 3 years. A bad bet perhaps but that's what you can get from hedging in fuel, currency derivatives or credit swaps, a practice some airlines and big corporations have been doing for a long time. Rumor also has it that SIA will see bigger losses than CX for its fuel hedging bets.

And who was it who said that "Southwest Airlines was primarily a fuel hedging company that also operates aircraft"?

PAL pay scale

Does anyone have the latest numbers for Group 1 Pilots?

ao65b 16th Aug 2009 15:21

I am a member of PAL Aviation School class of 65B. I am just wondering what happened to all my classmates. I left the Philippines in 1969.
I would love to hear from anyone who can share any info about those early classes (1964-1966).

Heard that the new graduates from PAL Av school last year won't be taken in the line till 2011 or 2012, with freeze hiring for PAL Express.

Also, have they been retrenching intentionally S/Os already in the line by telling them they actually failed the 6 monthly PAQB ? I've noticed that there seems to be a lot of unemployed S/Os from PAL floating around in the Gen Av since 2007 and especially now. I feel sorry for the guys and girls who have now started paying off their loans with no possible relief with employment. Hopefully most of them have financial support from their parents.

What's going on ?? I guess this is the effect of the Cat 2 downgrade of the Philippines.

There were a few applicants as flight and ground instructors in the schools I've noticed too.

E X O D U S

are pilots too satisfied to stay in this little pal pond of ours? why are we not leaving?

has management brainwashed us with their evil ploys to make it so threatening in the outside world that even if we need to be cost cutting, downsizing, the world outside is still expanding and hiring?

WHY ARE WE HERE? WHY AM I HERE?

E X O D U S ... the departure, the journey to the unknown...

hmmm

Prime,
this is definitely O.A. " i.e. WHY AM I HERE?" Exodus departure.. journey to the unknown.

Stirring too much about EXODUS. Are you afraid to go by your own and You have to advertised?

Or, are you wishing for people to GO , so at the end of the day you get to harvest a good pay increase.

The way you sound, you're not going anywhere farther than Gate 1 ( aside from your flights of course)

Gotcha Prime :=

Unaccommodated PAL AV grads

If pal av grads cannot be accommodated by PAL nowadays, what could be their option? Can they apply to 5J, Z2 or DG?

In the Philippines nowadays, is there a demand for pilots? Because from the looks of it, it seems that the future is bleak for newly grad pilots.. Do you really have to wait that long to get into the line? If one dreams of becoming a pilot, this could make him think twice.

Your comments please.

batuta23 28th Sep 2009 14:10

sad state for avschool grads. sadder for those who went out on a limb (read: not asking for daddy's help)in paying their way thru. i know of some who have families and put much confidence i their being accepted in the line after their graduation.wish something could be done for their group.but there's rumors that PALs sister is getting 320s and eyeing the PAL 320 line crew to get pilots from to start it off on the right foot. so if the vacuum starts then...... get ready lang, dodos....:)

onedelacruz 29th Sep 2009 00:09

any options for those not being able to get in the line after avschool graduation?

M 0.78 14th Oct 2009 18:32

One really important thing for these newly graduated pilots to do is maintain proficiency. At their experience level proficiency will deteriorate very quickly from lack of practice. To keep their licenses current, they need to fly at least 12 hours in the 12 months preceding expiry.

That can be expensive and very often leads to unacceptable practices. Falsification of certificates of flying time is the most common. The crocodiles at the CAAP can smell these from a mile away because it's always the same operators who issue the fake documents. Then it's feeding time at CAAP.

Renting airplanes is not cheap. But it is often the only way to keep current legally. A Cessna 172 pilot could split the cost of rental four ways among friends to make this more affordable. Note that there is only one place in the Philippines where they can rent airplanes. Those guys and gals who want to do this need to speak with BHG or MG about this.

how about "fish runs"?

although most are multi-engine operators, i was told quite some time ago that there's a 172 flying for this kind of job

or maybe some other charter company that uses a 172.

i'll bet they would be willing to "work" even without "pay"... they do have a CPL/IR license

I'm just curious about PAL av school grads... are all of them "sure in" after graduation? Was there a time in the past that there was a hiring freeze in PAL that some of their graduates had to wait and and find ways to keep their flying proficiency? Does PAL offer any help to their students if ever there were no vacancies in company?

I guess being a newly grad pilot is the most difficult phase... One has to deal with:

1) would anyone be interested to hire me if I were a newly grad pilot? any chances of getting in gen av for the meantime (as a means to build time as I am aiming for the airlines)

2) if no one would hire me, I would need to build time by renting a plane and fly (At this point I would have had spent a fortune: my AV school training + expense for additional flying hours)

3) if i were a PAL Av school grad and unfortunate to be hit by hiring freeze in the company, nos 1 and 2 would have to be my options.

Any comments please?

Running fish is now the hot option for building time and earning a little money at the same time. I don't know of any 172s being used for this. The payload/range isn't very good. The big trick is getting a foot in the door. You really need to know somebody within the operation to get a job there.

A: No

A: Yes

A: No

A: Maybe. There is that paradox about not being able to get a job without experience and vice versa. You can improve your chances if you show you're really interested in getting a flying job and make yourself visible. Don't expect them to come looking for you.

2) if no one would hire me, I would need to build time by renting a plane and fly (At this point I would have had spent a fortune: my AV school training + expense for additional flying hours)

A: You only need 12 hours in 12 months to maintain your license as stated by M 0.78. It could take more than 12 months to find a decent job. If you don't have a lot of time when PAL finally calls you, they will understand. But if you forget how to fly in the meantime, they will probably rather have someone else, even a non-avschool type. Maintain proficiency, a current license, and keep studying.

3) if i were a PAL Av school grad and unfortunate to be hit by hiring freeze in the company, nos 1 and 2 would have to be my options.

Fish runs

It will be a bit difficult to get in if you don't have a rating in any of their twins ( Baron, Aztec, Islander, ) or the SEL C206 coz they only need captains at this time i believe.
Most of the co-pilot time are given to Indian or any other foreign students paying for the experience and I heard that they are "busy" with this income generating arrangement thus cannot accommodate any local who would be employed to get experience thru the co-pilot avenue.

Bottom line is there is an over supply of trainees.

I have a big twin (around 8000 lbs MTOW and STOL) which can be used for fish runs if any of the operators would give work for it.

And do keep in mind it's not like applying for a call center position, just presenting your resume and expecting a wham, bang, thank you mam and then you have the job.
It's a very different scene in the Gen Av area, you have to do errands and out of the job favors just to have a right to make your presence felt and then maybe after quite sometime.... you may be considered. Unless you know the owner or a very well connected person.

Keep flying! :ok:
