Sri Lankan Airlines Lost USD 40 Million
Meanwhile, the country’s troubled national carrier SriLankan is said to have suffered a massive loss due to its engineering division trying to cut corners to save money. Sources said a large number of students of aviation schools, that it has taken in as trainees to overcome its skilled manpower shortage, had caused significant damage to its Airbus A-340 known aircraft known by its calling name 4R Alpha Delta Bravo inside one of its hangars.
They said that the aircraft had become a write off after its tail had been dropped on the ground during servicing recently. The mishap had happened when there were only two qualified technicians on the job where as there should have been six. The loss is said to be in the region of US$ 40 million.
The Island learns that the insurance had refused to bear the loss as it was due to sheer negligence.
Head of SriLankan Engineering Priyantha Rose too could not be contacted for comment despite repeated attempts.

Sri Lankan Special - Stwerdess
Meanwhile the cabin crew is up in arms against the airline management for allowing Sri Lankan stewardess Senali Senanayake to fly one short duration flight per month and the rest of the days to work as the Personal Secretary of Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.
“In addition to these benefits, she is also given all the VVIP flight work as well. Who has given her this authority when the rest of the cabin crew has only 8-10 off days per month? However she is paid by the airline and her service is provided to Namal Rajapaksa. Who has allowed the airline to pay a stewardess to fly only a short duration flight,” sources said.
They further accused the airline management of not taking any disciplinary action against Senanayake after she was found guilty for trying to influence the Human Resources Department to get one of the failed Cadet Pilot applicants recruited.
“She was found guilty for trying to influence the HR department pretending the call was from Namal Rajapaksa’s office. She has u rged the HR department to re-consider the matter. However it was only later that the HR department identified who the caller was. Had this happened to anyone else in the airline, strict disciplinary action would have been taken but in this instance the airline management is silent,” sources added.
The Sunday Leader contacted Lalith Fernando of the airlines Corporate Communications Division on Wednesday for comment on these allegations but no response was received by the time the newspaper went to print.

D & B, good stuff, keep it up!
Any more news on the tail damage? How come the aircraft is written off? Maybe other areas damaged as well?
Damn shame, not a loss that UL can take at this point.

There is damage to the fuselage, however it is not a write off. It should be fixed soon.
Once the aircraft is in service, you will probably realize that some of the posts are just a cut and paste from a certain newspaper in Sri Lanka whose information is not all that accurate to say the least.
I am not saying that UL is without problems. Far from it. But sometimes the media is also a liitle bit to eager.

What a sad story. UL is presently operating way below its real station in life.
Given the horrible transit experiences of almost everyone who has had to change from domestic to international or v.v. at most Indian airports, UL have always had a huge market in their backyard in southern India.
Personally, when living in India, I could always see a potential for UL flights out of secondary destinations, such as VOCB, VOMD, VOPC, VOTR etc. connecting with their international network from VCBI.
But I have also personally experienced the downhill road after the tie-up between EK and UL ended.
UL could have been a true success story.
