Hi Redbaron,

I think we are on the same page, I do understand the corruption you describe I lived 4 years in West Africa, it is exactly how you described it.
On my first post I said the problem is bigger with Susi ( the thread is about Susi but you can add what ever Indo, Indian, African, .....Airlines as you want ) because It is easier for them to corrupt their Gvt..

Companies like Susi & others in some part of the world do some crazy things & can get away with it.
My point is every company will cut corners to increase their profit margin or to survive, they will go as far as the system let them.
And if you think what Susi does, never happen in the US think again: Air Tahoma, Four Star Aviation,( I just list this two because they finally no longer exist, many other are still operating. But I will not list them, Bad mouthing the living in this days & age can get you in trouble = Freedom of speech is only for company with big lawyers & politicians.... ).

Does every airlines in the US are as bad as Susi ? Of course not but some come close.
In the US some people & companies are so powerful that what it could be view as corruption are laws:
Here are a few examples:

- Pizza is a vegetable in the US, so Food corporations can sell "vegetable..." to kid in school.
- Cargo pilot are way superior than passenger pilot, they do not need any rest rules. Being 16 hrs on duty on the other side of the clock is not a problem ( I guess FX & UPS have very good lobbyist in Congress ).
- Prison sentences for drug are differents in function of the drugs. Having crack will get you much tougher jail time than having Heroine. Why ? Crack = black people use , heroine = white people use.
- WE can go on for ever.....

My final point is Money rule the word ( I am not saying it is good, just an observation ).
As you pointed Susi might be closing not because of braking every rules, or disregard of safety, etc...( as it should be). But because creditors ( A/C manufacturer, Insurance,....) want their money.

Noblesse Oblige at Susi Air

Clearly the Baron and Auntie Susi do enjoy their royal status in Indonesia, not just because of what they have gotten away with in the aviation business but if you look back at Susi's black track record, single-handedly destroying the lobster fishery on the south coast of W Java, you can tell what any subsequent business attempt would be like. She has a USD credit line for buying aircraft and that has been used liberally. The Rupiah from operations used to pay ground staff, airport fees, fuel bills and her personal "joy" flights are another matter. Yes the company is insolvent since these two sources of funds are not to be mixed.

BTW, the sensitivity factor at Susi Air seems to be wearing thin. The day of the Kalimantan crash and for several days thereafter, Vans continued to circle Nusawiru (circuit training) as if nothing had happened. Apparently they didn't feel water in fuel tanks would be a problem with Caravans since the aircraft which went down was a Porter. Smooth deduction, Chief Pilot and Chief Engineer (that is if you were on duty...)

Problem with Indonesian Gov't or "Susi"

As long as the money for aircraft purchase remains nearly unlimited from the Dragon Lady's sources, she will keep buying planes. They are already planning to get more. And Mr Alaska is training ever more pilots... instructor of the day it seems at Nusawiru. But their internal financing is a mess and this ties in with all the deficiencies in the report. They buy planes with a USD drawdown on a major bank. But they have to pay wages, spares and all the rest with Rupiah earned on the job. And their business is not great, very inefficient, pilots are never in the right place when they're needed (hence ground staff sitting in the co-pilots seat...) and least of all, mechanics are not around when needed. They have to pay their courier and electric bills from time to time. All these are in arrears. Look for more accidents down the line.

I met a very senior executive of Susi Air at a safety conference in Singapore not that long ago. He was newly appointed and brought with him all the chief pilots (?) of each aircraft type flown. He gave me the impression that they were very serious about turning things around, I even saw him conduct a debrief to them at the end of the conference. With any luck, things will take a turn for the better.

I seem to recall that they also wanted to start a flight academy?

I see that the accident report for the Susi Air crash in Papua in September 2011 has been released. Here it is for your perusal.

Download Here.

The aircraft was operated above it's certified MTOW and suffered the consequences operating in mountainous terrain.

Susi Air Very Serious?

That's a laugh! But that's where the humor stops and the cold reality about this company sets in. Governments and corporations don't care about lives except diplomats, CEO's and High Net Worth individuals. That's on one side. Then there are the insurance companies who demand that you do many things to qualify for coverage OR pay a huge premium to offset the inevitable (in their eyes, as calculated by their actuarial) accident. I mean, in Indonesia, who is checking to see that loads are tied down and stowed properly? Or that the guys in the white shirts with little brass bars on their shirts are really pilots? Susi Air pulled this stunt in Bandung and got caught, remember?

Some of the previous posters have spoken of the relaxed safety culture in Indonesia and the fact that the DGCA (we prefer to call it the DepHub or Ministry of Transport, a collection of mostly big-bodied gangsters) don't do their jobs as we think they might. And wondered why the insurance premiums aren't sky high. Well, the reality is that certain companies are treated specially in this world. Just as certain people are teacher's pet.

That might sound counter-intuitive but the reality goes something like this: Women-Owned businesses are on the uptick. Why? Is it because all woman CEO's are very capable? Look around and analyze for yourself. They aren't! But in the current business-news and media 3-ring circus, WOB's are supposed to be proving the verity and worth of women's empowerment. Don't get us wrong here. There are plenty of great and capable women in the business world. The ratio of good women to good men in business need not be known or debated. What matters is that the New World Order has an agenda and Indonesia is one of its willing handmaidens. That means a buffoon like Susi can be a success. She is on TV constantly. And despite being prompted by overly helpful presenters, she still comes across as someone inappropriate to run a company. This is backed up of course by constant personal encounters some direct and some indirect. But still Cessna, Piaggio, Mechtronix, Bluesky and the rest love to wine and dine her, to get her woman's signature on the contracts.

Yes the corruption, power-of-talk factor make a big difference too. She can explain away her lapses easily to the DirJen Immigration, the Air Marshal / Indonesian Air Force, the Transport Ministry, the police and the list goes on. She gets away with it because she's a woman. Bribery helps of course but lately with the Corruption Eradication Board (KPK) watching things... sort of... there are excesses here which, quite frankly, others could not pull off as she has. Friends help too: Surya Paloh, Prabowo, Megawati, Bambang Trihatmodjo, Yusuf Kalla and plenty more. What they think of her personally doesn't really matter. She flies them here and there in the Avantis for free. Just check with their pilots!

Sure Susi wants to stop accidents, that is obvious. But as our posters have pointed out, there is the debt mountain building up. Meanwhile she finances her son's (Panji HILMANsyah) antics in the US. American European Aviation school in Naples / Venice. He's been flying around the US in a private plane having a good old time on the company's nickel. There's a Piper Arrow stashed at Nusawiru for his use when he gets back from his galavanting. Wonder how he'll ship the Harley he bought with company funds?

Well, some food for thought. Hope some company apologists don't consider us "racist" too for bringing up all this stuff!

Flying School to First Officer - FASTRACK at Susi!

Scary news considering. If you can read Indonesian, read for yourself. Christian announces that Susi Flying School will start hiring pilots from technical high schools starting sometime in 2014. Residents of Cijulang and visitors to Batukaras will need more than helmets to avoid what falls from the sky. Christian stresses they have to be mentally and physically fit. They will also have to meet a height requirement... wow, very important. And speak some English. Seems this is what companies, not just in aviation, seem to want: employees who are good-looking, tall and can command others in English. Smart doesn't seem to figure into things. Like the police in many developing countries. Well, Christian is quite tall so we might expect him to be prejudiced. His English is good too. The other consideration is too subjective to be debated here. Anyway, there is more.

They're going to be financed with a special scholarship. Maybe Kaji Ireng, Susi's own money-laundering pilot project - pardon the pun! Seriously, where is this money coming from? Susi's lobbying efforts?

The odd reality is that there are plenty of CPL's in Indonesia who can fly Susi type planes. Just offer professional wages and scads of experienced pilots will apply, Indonesians among them.So why do they need to do talent scouting at the high schools? Why of course: to find tall, good-looking and cheap new pilots! Welcome to the world of PT ASI.

Interesting also that the simulator and school opening were officiated by an unelected politician, the new temporary bupati of Pangandaran. Susi is playing king-maker in her home region, make no mistake about it. She has ambitions for the job herself. Flying everywhere isn't enough. She wants those noisy police escorts as well.
Susi Air Training Center dilengkapi simulator pesawat terbang Grand Caravan.
