NEW DELHI: Imagine a person found misfit to drive a small car being allowed to get behind the wheels of a big truck. If that sounds scary, hear this. The aviation safety regulator has found that some trainees who failed to become co-pilots or qualify as commanders on single-aisle Boeing 737 on Air India's budget arm AI Express were taken by the parent company to fulfil their dream on the widebody Boeing 777 that flies long-haul routes.

Let me comment that with incredibble logic: If you fly a B737 you have to do about 3 or 4 Take Off and Landings per day.... In a B777 You do only 3 or 4 per Month... Safer for the Public to do less ! Does that make sense?

Air India needs someone like Alan Joyce or Willie Walsh who can come in and attack the problems head on. Unfortunately there is little or no political will for that.

Yes of course you can ask.... There would be no legal obligation for them to show you.... However in India might not be a bad idea.... Throw in a few technical questions too... Along with weather / notams..... Make sure the local hero is prepared for the flight.

Yes, this is my first post here.

Employees preferring their children and fastracking their children's career is a human nature. Most of us would do this. I say again,most of us not all.
but still all i say is that most of us want to do it. But are not able to.

And the reason they are not able to do it because of company polices and rules.

I consider that this thing happened and will continue to happen in air india because of weak regulations within the company, there are no strict rules to follow. Company policy regarding the career progressions of their employee should be very strict.

Here in air india everyone takes advantage of their posts.

I wonder what impact will this news about air india express being used as a training ground for pilots have on passengers.
Or may be i am wrong.
Pax in india are least concern about all these issues.

Another safety issue i feel is regarding hiring of ab initio pilots.

Will you be surprised if i tell u that there are many FO on 777 in air india who are just 19-20 years of age and with 200 hours of flying experience. Imagine the commander getting a heart attack in the middle of atlantic and all is left with the inexperienced first officer.
There was also an instance when AI had send 200 hour cpl holders for type rating on 777 and the TRTO agency were shocked and refused to train some of them.

But still even after all this, god has been very great to us as the indian skies are very safe and safety has been on our side until now at least.

Why shouldn't the F/O who failed not be sent on a 777?? well he will be trained and checked by a check pilot for his proficiency. If he passes he will be sent on 777!! so many Dr's. fail in MBBS exam, are they not allowed to practice after they pass ? what Times news paper has reported, doesn't cover the whole story . anyway happy landing

Flyboijai, the point is this.... unqualified children do not belong in a cockpit with fare paying passengers on board. Those who've paid good money have a reasonable expectation of safe carriage with a safe, fully trained and qualified compliment of crew at the controls of their chariot... wouldn't you agree?


At the end of the day, Flyboijai, and I'm sure you'll agree with the rest of us, there is no room for nepotism, nor corruption in the cockpit. This goes for all government subsidized carriers round the world.

What's the difference from hiring cadet candidates whose choice was made, in great part, by hiring profiles that took aviation aptitude into little consideration. Then throwing the chaps into a C-172 for a couple hundred hours, letting them suffer through an extended groundschool where they languish for over a year at very little pay, and then - voila - they are given a spiffy suit and sent to fly B777s from the right seat. Long haul. Just a few legs a month, 10 years later they are "Commanders" and 2-3 years later they are "Instructors". Still can't land in a crosswind - that's what the autoland is for, still live and die by the auto-pilot.
