Jet flight with 134 passengers averts mid-air collision

Guwahati, July 21 (IANS): A Jet Airways flight with 134 passengers on board narrowly averted a mid-air collision on Thursday, triggering panic aboard, passengers said.

Jet Airways Flight No 9W 2280 from New Delhi to Guwahati was probably flying over Patna when it abruptly lost control, leading to chaos inside.

"First the flight abruptly turned right and then began to plummet. We thought it would crash. There was chaos and people were screaming inside," Caushik Bezboruah, chief executive officer of News Live, a satellite TV channel from Guwahati, told IANS.

"I heard people crying, some praying on top of their voices. It was a chaotic situation for close to a minute before the pilot took control," added Bhaskar Sharma, director of News Live.

Both Bezboruah and Sharma were seated in the emergency exit row of the plane.

Soon after, the pilot announced that another plane was approaching from the opposite direction and was inside the "safe zone".

"The pilot said the flight's computer system automatically navigated the plane and moved away from the path of the approaching flight to avoid a mid-air collision," Bezboruah said.

The incident took place around 11.35 a.m. The Jet Airways flight landed safely in Guwahati around 1 p.m.

"No one was injured but I saw a woman with an infant frantically trying to reach her seat from the washroom when this incident took place. She didn't manage to reach her seat and instead sat on the aisle," Sharma said.

Among those aboard the plane included Assam Congress president Bhubaneswar Kalita and Congress MP Rani Narah. "God is great. We had a near brush with death," said Narah.

Jet Airways issued a statement regarding the incident.

"Jet Airways flight 9W 2280 from Delhi to Guwahati-Agartala encountered rough air generated by a large Boeing 747 taking off at around 1122 hrs this morning at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The flight was uneventful, continued on its normal course and the aircraft landed safely at its destination in Gawahati at 1300 hrs," the statement said.

TCAS at its best? or wake?
Maybe both. TCAS RA doesn't give a turn command its either a climb or a decent only.

and TCAS cannot take any evasive action by itself... it only calls out for recommended action..... the PIC has to do what needs to be done..

This seems to be a classic case of wake turbulence and the media is conveniently blowing things out of proportion like they always do.

The Indian media has no knowledge of aviation and doesn't know how to report on this industry.

I remember, at the peak of the fake pilot scam, a certain news channel has
playing in the background, as the reporter spoke of the scam. The video is actually a Dutch Hieneken Ad. The channel conveniently used the landing shown in the video to misguide public as to something that a 'fake pilot' might end up doing/done.

I am certain that after watching this said video on the news, a large population of nervous flyers must have decided against their next flight - Scared ****less as they say.

Don't completely believe what the Indian media says. Not just aviation, they don't know how to report on anything accurately. They literally try to make a saas-bahu soap out of every other happening that is report worthy.

Jet Airways flight almost involved in Mid-Air collision over or abeam Patna.

Hmmmm i tried my best to catch this news and changed as many Channel's on TV as i can ever remember doing superfast channel surfing in my teenage days just to catch glimpse of some phoreign babe while studying late nights just to get reminded that this is Jet Air news not an Air India news, which is displayed with bloody animated planes & strips which would even go unnoticed by infants but not by Democratic Indian Electronic Media.....

So FMC of Jet plane went a step ahead of PIC and controlled the plane itself in not so computed path...

Atleast Pilots took control of it and handled the situation calmly.

PS : Only RATS( Yes that's correct and no its not Ram Turbine Air ) gets more coverage in AI flights.

@johnny boy:

hahaha..

Frankly, i am surprised that this news was reported in at least some parts of the media. Maybe the 9W PR team didn't send them the goodies on time.

We all know that an AI aircraft running over a pig in Nagpur is bigger news and much more dangerous than a 9W aircraft entering wake turbulence or what ever it was and dropping down to the ground.

Well it summarizes the state of rear kicking that a particular airline gets over others when each & every one falls on same wavelength pulled apart by wild artificially created Breaking News.

Jet Air - ATR 42 from doing a 3 point flight does twice nose wheel landing resulting is non repairable landing gear.
Outcome - No breaking news.SRK joins Jet as Brand ambassador.

Kingfisher - ATR skids off RW in Mumbai and damages are beyond repairable causing DGCA backlash on Training imparted by 5 Star airline to its cabin crew.KFA 320 lands in GOA in VFR dis-regarding DGCA's regulations.
Outcome - India consumes record level of BEER and KF beer leads the way.

Air India - Tyre Burst on normal landing strip with heavy monsoon rains.Breaking news.Lives saved as pilot declared emergency landing( How come Pilot knew that tyre got busted while being on finals?....words of Chetan Bhagat saying emergency declared by pilots ...yes he is 5 Point guy )
Outcome- Close down AI.

Kingfisher - Dozen full of Flights gets canceled due to non payment/late/credit/debt/advance - Pick any of those resulting in multiple flights being clubbed/canceled or in plain language...travelers got bombed by Mr Cool Uncle's 5 Star liner.
Outcome- KFA voted best airline in India by customers.

Air India - London to Mumbai flight facing severe underload resulting in with flight being clubbed to London-Delhi.
Outcome- Close down AI and please provide link for Indian Railways direct Bullet Train from London to Mumbai via European tour?

Indigo - Windshield bursting numerous times while being at cruising level.
Outcome- On Time performance( Landed on time to get repaired )

Air India - CRJ got engine problems in Chennai and flight delayed for indefinite time due to severe shortage of certified AME who is flown from Delhi to Chennai on next available flight.
Outcome- Poor performance. Please some one close down AI.

Spice - Perfect landings in Busiest Airport of India only to be reminded by Tower that " Spice you have landed on closed RW, Report to Tower Immediately.PIC- Roger ".
Outcome- Best LCC of India (2009)

Air India - Rat found on 747 bound for Gulf.Rat got 5 star treatment and honour for holding big bird on his tail.Resulting bizarre allegations that RAT was drunked by half filled minature bottle which Capt Beri forgot to offload with himself and got into brawl with local cleaners.
Outcome- Please some one close down AI & save RAT's from being made heavy drinkers.

Paramount - Best biz class airliner by miles as most of passengers are high class CEO's or IAS.Later many of them found to be money launders for 2G scam and various scam of past.Mr Paramount currently being raided by Income Tax.
Outcome - Best new biz class airline.

Air India - Expat pilot on leave from Delhi to Mumbai asked to vacate his seat for Mr Minister who was traveling to attend some RED FLAG meeting.
Outcome- Please close down AI as its wasting Tax payers money on Expats.

Kingfisher - In late 2008 when global aviation biz was suffering from recession.Mr Cool Uncle wanted Govt of India to bail out Indian Airlines and made a meet of FIA( Federation of Indian Airlines ) to get a backing and demand money or India face strike.First time some 5 star rated Owner said that if AI can get money why can't we?
Outcome - Got verbally trashed by GOI but retained Star ratings for not going on strike and being reminded that " Hey boss when we are least bother about AI and don't even pay them for their service then how come you think we will give you bailout....just wait we will provide you best routes snatched from AI "

Air India- In 2011 April,Pilots from erstwhile IC went on strike when notice period lapsed and no confirmation from management regarding arrears and pay parity with AI pilots came to table resulting in mass sick leaves following with sackings.Similarly in 2010 may low grade employees went on hunger strike which resulted in mass sackings.
Outcome - Stop payments to AI and close down AI.Don't waste TAX money on AI.Sack all ....Privatize AI....Sell AI....

Moral of this Bull**** -

AI can be battered.
AI can be humiliated.
AI can punched and then re punched just to shake off frustration of others.

But rivals are pushed for glory.

Delhi school students partying on terrace avert possible air disaster

Five school students, who were partying on a South Delhi terrace last weekend, apparently helped save over 350 lives when they saw flames coming out of the engine of an aircraft that had just taken off and alerted the police.

Their swift action followed by the urgent response of the police led the air traffic control (ATC) to clear the runway for the New York-bound Air India plane to return to base and land safely under emergency conditions last Saturday, police said today.

Air India officials said the pilots had noticed the flames soon after take-off and had already sought permission for an emergency landing from the ATC. All those on board were safe.

They said the boys could have noticed the plane when it was returning to land.

Air India's Boeing 777 (Long Range) plane, with 339 passengers and 16 crew members on board, was operating as flight AI-101 from New Delhi to New York. It took off around 0130 hours on the intervening night of July 16 and 17 as per schedule.

Soon after take off, the right engine developed technical trouble, prompting the pilots to immediately turn around.

At that time, five school students - Kartik Bhadolia, Jaideep Gosai, Himanshu Soni, Mannan Soni and Malik Gilani, who were partying on the terrace of a house in Saket, spotted sparks and flame from the engine

Looks like we also had an RTO on thursday

Another air tragedy averted: Chhattisgarh governor, 130 passengers escape unhurt
Raipur: Thursday was a day of air emergencies as three major tragedies were averted in various parts of the country. While a mid-air collision was reportedly averted over Patna, an Air India Mumbai-Bhopal flight landed at Bhopal’s Raja Bhoj Airport with jammed wheels. Raipur’s Mana airport also witnessed an emergency situation with Jet Lite’s Delhi-Raipur-Delhi flight developing some technical fault.

Nearly 130 passengers, including Chhatisgarh governor Shekhar Dutt Tiwary and several IAS and VIPs, had a narrow escape when the aircraft was stopped abruptly in the middle of the runway a few seconds before take off. Pilots aborted the take off following a technical snag.

Frantic passengers were de-boarded of the aircraft soon after it stopped while CISF men and fire tenders surrounded the troubled aircraft to handle any emergency.

Governor Tiwary was escorted back to the VIP lounge by his special guards.

Jet airways officials face passenger’s fury

Hours after the incident, the airline management failed to give assured answer to the passengers as to when the flight will actually take off. Finally, the flight was cancelled later in the evening following increasing passenger’s fury. The passengers were accommodated in Jet’s flight later to Delhi in the evening.

press statement by JET:

With reference to erroneous media reports about the aversion of a ‘mid-air collision’, Jet Airways would like to clarify that flight 9W 2280 from Delhi to Guwahati- Agartala, of July 21, 2011, for a few seconds experienced 'wake turbulence' during the cruise phase possibly on account of a Boeing 747 aircraft passing overhead in the opposite direction.

The minimum required vertical separation (1000 feet) for crossing traffic was maintained at all times.

The Jet Airways flight was completed uneventfully, landing in Guwahati at 1300 hours.

The airline regrets any inconvenience caused to its guests.

^^ New one hurray !

Have this one ever shown on live TV news?
Have this one ever shown with funny animated way?

Ohh man just visualize how the animation will go on this one:

A plane preferably 787logo toy plane considering Dreamliner's are new entrant with much anticipated delay.....rolling fast as if Schumacher is behind the control zooming fast on RW when suddenly he see's ( A cow or better if a local milkman ) waving & standing some good 200 meter ahead waving at Jet plane bringing an abrupt fast & furious brakes applied on by the pilots( Schumacher as PIC and would pick Massa as co-pilot considering how later got dominated ) while declaring - Mayday Mayday Mayday RW encroachment before getting a kick by Tower saying go ahead and stop Mayday ,its normal in Raipur.

Now with the toy plane being skidding slipping rolling and at end getting inverted by TV crew's load boy before a TAG saying " Are we Cattle's or Dogs ....because who will take responsibility of this error"

Will writing this post i searched TV channels again and found none regarding this news ...i only got news flashs of AI 777

Bad Media....Very Bad Media brodcasting.
