GoAir on shopping spree, to buy 72 A320 aircraft for Rs 32,400 cr
Wadia group-owned no-frills airline, GoAir, today announced placing an order for 72 Airbus 320 aircraft, valued at Rs 32,400 crore. With the latest order, the airline with ten aircraft in its fleet currently, has a total order book of 92 aircraft.
“As part of our Vision 2020, we have placed an order for additional 72 A320 NEO aircraft with Airbus. These aircraft will give us a further competitive advantage of up to 15 per cent on efficiency, primarily gained from a much improved fuel burn,” GoAir managing director Jeh Wadia said.
GoAir’s announcement comes six months after country’s largest low-cost carrier IndiGo announced its decision to order 180 aircraft. The company would take delivery of its additional aircraft from its previous order over the next two years. The placement of the order for the 72 aircraft will be a game-changer for GoAir and the Indian aviation sector, Wadia said.
“In terms of aircraft, there is tremendous potential in India which has barely six airlines with 350 aircraft catering to a billion people, compared to China’s 1,100. Incidentally, with all the present orders placed by Indian carriers, we would reach 1,100 aircraft by 2020,” Wadia said, adding that “our strategy is to fly those who currently don’t fly.”
The airline also announced appointment of Giorgio De Roni, a former chief revenue officer of Italian airline Air One, as its new CEO who would take over from Kaushik Khona.
Wadia said the airline is not looking at international destinations at present. “GoAir has no plans currently to fly international routes. I feel there is too much competition, especially from low-fare carriers and I anticipate a bloodbath there. I wish good luck to some of our competitors who are set to fly international routes,” he said.
