Air asia Philippines?

A couple of months ago TF mentioned about setting up Airasia Philippines in Clark. Anybody got any news? Would be interesting since Tiger will soon have one foot in the philippines domestic air travel with Seair starting their A320 ops in Clark soon.

AirAsia to Form Philippine Venture With Cojuangco in First Quarter of 2011

By Cecilia Yap - Dec 7, 2010 7:00 PM GMT+0800
AirAsia Bhd., Southeast Asia’s biggest budget carrier, plans to form a Philippine unit by the first quarter of next year, Philippine Board of Investments head Cristino Panlilio said.
The Philippine venture will be formed with Antonio Cojuangco, a former chairman of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., and start flying domestic and overseas routes in 2011, Panlilio said by phone today. Cojuangco is President Benigno Aquino’s cousin and a nephew of San Miguel Corp. Chairman Eduardo Cojuangco.
Sepang, Malaysia-based AirAsia may expand into the Philippines as airlines including Cebu Air Inc. increase their fleets and services to meet rising demand in the archipelago. The government has set a target to double tourism arrivals in six years to help spur economic growth.
Today is a national holiday in Malaysia. An e-mail to AirAsia Chief Executive Officer Tony Fernandes didn’t immediately receive a reply.
Tiger Airways Holdings Ltd., the budget carrier backed by Singapore Airlines Ltd., on Nov. 23 said it will lease two planes to South East Asian Airlines or SEAir and form a marketing venture to expand into the Philippines.
SEAir flights from Clark, north of Manila, to Singapore will start Dec. 16 and be offered through Tiger Air’s website.

Airline Industry and Aviation Safety News from Flightglobal
------------------------------------
Excerpt from the article:
"
Malaysia-based low-cost carrier AirAsia will set up a new joint venture carrier in the Philippines, which will begin operations in the third quarter of 2011.
It will hold a 40% stake in the carrier through its wholly-owned subsidiary AirAsia International, says the carrier. Philippine investors Antonio O. Cojuangco Jr, Michael R. Romero and Marianne B. Hontiveros will own the remaining 60%, with each individual holding a 20% stake."...
----------------------------------------------

This is great news for the region. AA does for sure have a nice product coupled with cheap fares...win-win for the travellers in the Philippines! Always nice to have a competing product. ...needless to say GREAT employment avenue for the locals!

Not for 2 coconuts and 1 Banana per hr. Maybe you can hire new graduates from the Koh Samui Monkey School to do that.

Onie tiger airways will be going to a brighter and better future as long as you don't interfere with the company with your own SOP!

Good for all of us

Hi all.
Once Air Asia gets off ground 3Q this year, this will be good for all of us.
Remember this is a 60% owned Filipino company which bought the franchise from Air Asia Malaysia. Thus, its going to be local pilots & cabin crews & mechanics.
No way they will pay coconuts, bananas & peanuts. They wont get the pilots & cabin crews to get off the ground if they do this.
My reliable insider info told me that Air Asia Philippines is more interested into flying the West Coast US (i.e. SFO & LAX) route via Clark using the A340. PAL, watch out!!!
Sea Air/Tiger Air... hmmm...... not gonna be as big as Air Asia Phils... the Singaporean partners are not as enthusiastic as TF & his partners. Bear in mind that TC is first cousin of Pnoy... my best guess is he'll get the routes (and a lot more) for Air Asia Phils.
Cheers everyone.
The future is looking bright... I gotta wear shades!!!

If they do go to LAX and SFO it would work out nicely for AK X as it would merge nicely into their network! Not just PAL but a lot of other carriers better watch out.......

AK flying to the US makes a lot of sense but it's not exactly a secret that every airline in the country wants to do that. 5J and Zest both have ambitions to fly transpac once the Philippines gets out of FAA Category 2. AK's edge is that they already have the equipment to do it, while the others will still have to get those big aircraft.

my oh my, PAL will definitely die once this happens. their US flights are the only ones keeping them alive. no wonder people chuckle whenever you hear old boy Jimmy B saying PAL isn't against Open Skies lol!

Gotta get to FAA CAT 1 first.... And with PNoy's cronies playing politics at CAAP that may take a while.

Re-Cat I Restriction (FAA)

Does it apply to Air Asia? Will anyone elaborate further?

Anyway, Air Asia Philippines is a "FORCE" to reckon with considering the "powerful players" behind its establishment.

Does anyone know how much is the total package? Where to apply?

I'm just wondering if it is worth leaving my current outfit right now.
