Spicejet - Maran buying 51% stake?

I'm sure most of us over here have heard the rumors about Mr. Kalanithi Maran interested in buying majority stakes at Spicejet. With him in the race was Anil Ambani and Religare. A recent article ( Sun TV's Kalanithi Maran strikes SpiceJet majority stake deal ?? | MoneyMint.in - Business Exchange ) gives us information that Maran has outbid the two and is finishing up with the deal in the days to come.

Do any of you out here have anything to say about this?

Is the deal going to help spicejet? We all know hes a smart business man but hes been only associated with the media as an entruprener. Why would someone with his background want to get into the aviation industry at this point of time? Though I know things are slowly looking up.

Cheers to all

Aviation is not a good business-Anonymous
Sun TV promoter Kalanithi Maran is one of the highest paid CEO in the country with his annual salary package over Rs. 35 crores. Also, his wife Kaveri, another promoter in the Sun TV Network draws the same amount of annual salary and together combined take home over Rs. 70 crores.
Is his hard earned money going to go down the drain with this investment or will he cherish the fruits from it? Can go either way.
Anyways good time to get in. Maran getting 51%, Wilbur Ross exiting? any news?

Well put together with Ross and other parties 40% equity shares will come into the market over the coming months. Guess that will create a flutter

The Marans have laid their hands in all profitable business till now. They have monopoly in the cable TV and DTH indutry in Tamil Nadu. They bought a high selling news daily. Ofcourse their Cable channels are very popular and profitable. As always in politics a lot of arm twisting and back room "not very clean negotiations" are involved to buy businesses at less than market value. Nothing surprising.

The same family also was rumored to be starting an airline in Tamil Nadu but it has come to surprise me that they have instead bought a huge stake in Spice Jet.

From a pilot's point of view i dont know whether this is good or bad. A fair amount of back door appointments for flying and ground duties are to be expected. Hey but then, when has this not been around in this industry?

Over all i say this is a positive move for spice Jet because the Maran family has the CLOUT and FINANCE to stabilize the ailrine. Expect more profits for Spice Jet in the coming years. (at whose expense is the question )

Not an auspicious start for Maran
1.SpiceJet flight makes emergency landing in Ahmedabad - dnaindia.com
2.
The New Delhi-based airline fell 3.1 percent to 56.05 rupees in Mumbai trading on June 11 after ET Now television said that Maran had bought a 37 percent stake for about 40 rupees a share.
they might now rename it
SUN Airlines

“We are not yet aware of the exact cause or nature of the technical snag,” said Sanjay Aggarwal, CEO, SpiceJet.

Thats one reason Maran may be looking for a new one.

Maran is making a mistake

I am familiar with the investing style of Wilbur Ross. If he is selling now, it will at or near the top and I reckon it can only go down from here. Maran I reckon is buying into something he will regret.

Wilbur Ross selling most likely means he has got the most out it and he can only see bad times ahead.

@sjken
Ross invested $100m in July08, he is getting $127m in June10. So, he did profit from his investment. Works out 2 b 13.5%. Not bad.

I read somewhere, Ross saying that the airline is ready for its next phase of ownership and expansion. He didn't say anything else.

Maran is a good businessman. He should b able to keep things up.

As per news reports Maran is moving HQ (closer to home) and changing the name of spice jet.

First is his prerogative, but the second will be sad. I really like the name and what was a nice touch was how each aircraft was named after names of spices.

A perfect global touch while linking it to something so dear to Indian cuisine.......

Hope the new name does not become some un pronounceable region centric name. If yes wonder if he will sell or allow anyone else to use the name spice jet!!!!

Last I heard, he was planning to rename "SpiceJet" as "Sun Airways" and the aircraft will go from sporting Spice-names to those of planets/stars/galaxies.

Talk about stabbing the brand!

Hopefully in a recognizable name and script.

Haha true. But what must be of concern to us is that if they will be recruiting pilots anytime soon !

Just read, - Spicejet CEO Sanjay Aggarwal Quits | VCCircle

Wonder what is next?

Shifting base to Chennai and changing the name to Sun Airways looks like its a definite. Ever since Mr.Maran bought major stake at Spice he has been keen to do the above mentioned. While shifting base, really wouldn't make a difference. I feel, just like the rest of you, that changing the name from Spicejet to Sun Air might, since spice does have a brand name. Although branded to be delayed on departure and arrival times almost always. The airline has stuck around for 5 years! But, the big-shot business man that Maran is i'm sure he has made a calculation towards the changes. Only time will tell.

I disagree. "Sun Airways" (as the rumours go here down south), sounds way better than Spicejet.

Spicejet sounds too riff raff, with a reputation of being a non punctual airline strictly for the masses.

Im sure Maran can do a few things to give this airline some class.

(I know I might have touched a few raw nerves ! )

and yeah, by next year we're going to see a lot of Passenger Announcements being made in Tamil ! (courtesy, the inflow of a lot of crew, young and old through the good ol "back door". )

By that logic Shanx I wonder what your thoughts are about the name Virgin!! (in re: to Riff Raff).........

You can change a politician from a dhoti to an Armani suit, you can not change his nature, so simply changing the name will not make the airline develop a reputation of being punctual. Hopefully addressing the issue head n by new management will over a period of time develop a better track record.

If they feel re branding is sufficient then more power to them

By the way open offer of Rs 1 for the trade mark Spice Jet if they want to offload it.
