CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Philippines -- (UPDATE) Three foreigners were presumed dead while three others were injured when a cargo plane crashed on rice paddies past a dike in Mexico town in Pampanga province at past 9 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the town mayor.
No residents were hurt or killed because the crash happened away from houses, Mayor Teddy Tumang said.
The last contact of the tower with the aircraft was at 8:48 p.m.
The plane crashed in Barangay Laput, not in Barangay San Patricio as earlier reported by the town’s mayor.
The three surviving men, who were later confirmed to be Russians, were seen parachuting out of the burning plane, residents in the area told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
An emergency van arrived at around 10:30 p.m. to reportedly take them to a hospital. Tumang helped bring the survivors to the Makabali Hospital in San Fernando.
Tumang said the aircraft was smaller than a C-130 plane and had a label Inter-Island Antonov 12.
The survivors told village leaders that three of their companions who were still in the burning plane might be dead. It was still in flames as of Wednesday night. Fire trucks had a difficult time entering the area.
The Pacific East Air Cargo (PEAC) chartered the plane for the operations of the international cargo forwarding firm UPS, a report from the state-owned Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC) said.
The plane came from Cebu and was bound for the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport in Clark Freeport where UPS maintains an Asian hub.
CIAC confirmed that three crew survived. It said it did not have updates on the status of the three other crew members or if there were civilian casualties. It did not release names.
Aircraft registration number UP-AN216.

What bad luck! would have been nice to see an AN12 in Clark flying over my house on short final!
RIP the crew
Amazing to see they have parachutes for crew members! Probably the load master/mechs bailed out? AN 12s usually have 2 pilots,1 flt engineer, 1 radio operator and 1 navigator! Indian Air Force used to operate a bunch of these but i guess they have been retired in the 90s...
Sad.....so sad to see one more burly beast go down.

fernandeztv: once we chartered An-12s, and the crew complement was 2 pilots, 1 nav, one radio operator, 1 flt engineer, atleast 3 additional mechs, and a couple of spare tires, some repair kit, and a ladder, and a some more bits and pieces, even a small 500va Gen set - enough to run your own airline ops far from civilisation ..
Damn .. they were really taken care of anyway ..
RIP to the crew who perished..

metro-man: but Sharjah is the biggest base for all the ex-CIS aircraft ..
A drive by the Sharjah airport will show a lot of ANs, ILs and what nots parked, under maintenance in open air and in various stages of refurbishment ..

More details have emerged out of the statements of the survivors. Apparenty there was no bailing out in parachutes...the media got that one wrong
The pilot and the copilot are among the survivors. They had electrical problems and decided to force land the aircraft in the open paddy fields. Unfortunately the landing went wrong and the aircraft burst into flames after the forced landing.

AN in RP
what i find strange is that there is (was!) an Antonov flying in RP! no pilots here fly the AN, that's why the crew were foreigners. can anybody say what country of registry is UP-AN216?

The plane is flown by Eastern European crew as it is on Wet Lease .. nothing abnormal there ..
Inter-Island did have an AN 26, and somebody else also had a Yak flying in RP -
As for the Regn UP - is it Utopia or Pandora ??

But yeah, I was skeptical about the parachute report when it first came out, seeing as the account came from villagers. A lot of people think the only way anyone survives a plane crash is by bailing out.

Landing in a paddy field, at night .. even though the Antonovs are buillt to take a great amount of beating .. maybe the nose just crumpled ..
RIP - they had to fly half way around the world to make a living and get killed in a paddy field ...
