Post Low Cost Carrier to start up in Malaysia?

One of the main Irish newspapers recently carried an article about ex Aer Lingus/ ex Ryanair manager, Mr.Conor McCarthy. He was reported to now be in Malaysia working on the launch of a new low cost airline there.

His backer was named as one Tony Fernandez.

Conor McCarthy has a good deal of experience in the low cost model through his time with Ryanair in Ireland.

Anyone heard more about it?
Is it going to work in Asia as a concept?

(PS Sicksquid, names mentioned are all in public domain and I can provide the sources.)

Cool, Idunno. Thanks for respecting the rules of the forum, appreciate it! £6

Believe he is working with the new owner of Air Asia.

A story was reported in Asiaweek magazine;

Heard that another "telecommunication tycoon" is the man behind the scene with ex-JPJ boss as the chairman. Don't know how much they can drain from AK this time after MH was left with nothing except debt.

GOD Bless Everybody..........

HushKitted, Actually I personally know the bosses and they don't intend to do another Tadjudin R. and rape the airline. Good ideas and good intentions for the low cost carrier concept and it's going well so far considering it's just the beginning. Will take a while for the Malaysian public to catch on, but it's in their best interest in these Economic times and it gives an alternative choice for the domestic market. Otherwise get all the frills and pay double the price and fly with MAS. Management style is very much like Easyjet, Ryanair, Southwest etc, with a total 'open doors' policy, everyone very approachable and they get actively involved with the employees to see for themselves where the improvements need to be.

All in all, definitely in a better position now then under DRB-Hicom. Otherwise the debt and situation would end up like MAS.

I know C McC. He's unlikely to try to bleed it dry because he's seen the greater potential for making money with this model. I think they'll all become very rich men. With airlines like MAS to compete with it is begging to be done.

So...anyone got their email address? I'm game!

They are using Boeing 737-300's and it always plans to be a 737 type operation.

Thats OK by me QNH1013...I'm a BoeingBus pilot! I've got the Malaysian license too.

Anyhow, if they're half as succesful as they oughta be with this concept they'll be needing plenty of drivers!

If they let me base in Langkawi I'll even work local terms!

With their low fare and base at SZB, doubt Mas will ever breakeven in the domestic sectors.

If Air Asia managed to make money (which I believe they will), it would just show how inefficient Mas is.

Not at all surprise, they will close SZB just to curtail Air Asia Success.

Air Asia will try and remain at SZB for a while onger, but ultimately it is PM's decision. If MAS do move all operations to KLIA, they will try and drag everyone else there. KLIA after all, needs the business and there is alot more politics involved with this. Who knows for now anyway.

Air Asia were looking for crews and were already interviewing recently.
