This guy has been rightly punished for partaking in this sickening child pornographic trade. What is disturbing is that it looked like a tip off; someone wanted him done in.
In this world where such sickening stuff can be easily downloaded and burnt onto a mini DVD; who is to believe you if someone with an axe to grind slips one into your jacket, bag etc and tip off the cops?

I never posted to the fact that all porn has a stigma of taboo attached to it. All i said was that CHILD Porn is wrong and thats it.
As for being a judge, i guess you are right that it wouldnt be my cup of tea. Capital punishment would be my sentence but hey i guess everyones off the hook because i have no interest in law.
As for sounding immature well i guess we should agree to disagree.

It seems everyone is out to cut, hang and dry this individual b4 he is duly given a fair hearing. Agreed, child porn is abhorrent and should be rightly condemned. However, the facts of the case be examined 1st. He was NOT CHARGED with this crime, as there WAS NO child pornography to be found in his possession. He would have had hell to pay if so (I believe the penalty for child porn is a fine of more than 100K AND a custodial sentence). Instead, he was charged with importing "objectionable" material into Oz (you all know very well that they already have enough of the stuff!!!
). There were 3 clips with titles suggesting contents of that nature, tho'.
It is safe to say that the vast majority of us have viewed porn in some form or other at some time (statistically over 70% of internet usage is devoted to this subject). Most of us are also reliant on our lap tops for entertainment, be it to watch DVDs, play games, surf and communicate. Imagine you "chance"
on some adult content and forget to delete it...
Put yourself in his shoes. You have just completed an all-nighter. Customs make you wait HOURS while they manually check each and every file in your notebook. They slap you in irons, and the lawyer tells you that it's only a misdemeanor and tells you to plead guilty...

As far as I know, there's no censorship on the internet in Australia; but they do have a kiddie porn squad monitoring those kiddie sites. You can surf and download all the porn stuff in Australia and not get into trouble, but not the latter stuff.
A likely scenario is that those who were screened at the customs were targetted. Maybe they surf the kiddie websites in Australia before but the squad could not to spring into action since they were in public areas ie. not fixed residences/homes.
Secondly, if the stuff were usual porn stuff as proclaimed, I would certainly had my day in the Australia media and the media would blast all involved - since it concerns internet censorship.
So, people in MAS, please keep us posted on any development in MAS.

Guest_2008, me thinks you have to be a wee bit more cynical when the press is concerned. The SIA pilot had the (in)famous "T...." clip, but the press did not bother to retract the "child-porn" allegations when the facts became known. Doesn't sell papers, bro!
I reiterate that the chap was NOT charged with possession of child-porn, but importing "objectionable material". He would certainly have been slapped with a much stiffer (no pun intended) sentence, as child-porn is punishable with an up to $275000 fine plus a jail term of 10 yrs. He certainly had 3 clips with titles that unfortunately suggested content relating to child-porn. And the magistrate NEVER viewed the clips as they were not presented as evidence; only a brief breakdown of content describing schoolgirl porn (the chap should have retracted his guilty plea, IMHO, at that point). But remember he is just a young chap who has just spent his 1st night in a cold damp cell, being advised by a lawyer who believes it to be a simple open-shut case.
I am not claiming to be an authority on Japanese porn,
but you may be aware that there seem to be a major following of young models in that part of the world. Again, the titles of the material, manner of dress and presentation is designed to SUGGEST underaged participants, as that's where the demand lies. A background check will reveal that the girls are, indeed legal models.
Child-porn is a growing menace. However, the networks do not operate so openly. Interpol is constantly monitoring and infiltrating these rings, who I believe have many members down under (in fact, a retire police chief was recently indicted...). If indeed the Oz authorities were on the lookout for him based on a tip-off, he would have had the book thrown at him, and not a mere $5000 fine.
The British have an admirable code. Don't kick a man when he's down. How about we apply a measure of fair-play here?

If MH terminate his services, Mr Said should be able to get employment elsewhere and then sue the whole bunch of establishments that caused him grief; ie if standman is correct. The Aussie police had botched ( with outrageous lies and diabolical intentions to further some hidden agenda ) in the Dr Haneef case in BNE and their customs dept counterparts do have their own sickening agenda too. The newspapers which carried inaccurate accounts need to be held accountable. The airline, if it indeed terminate his employment, will also have to face up to it's inappropriate decision.

Two men charged with pornography offences in Adelaide - Friday, 8th February 2008
Customs has charged two men with pornography importation offences after unrelated detections at Adelaide International Airport in the last 48 hours.
The first man, a 41-year-old Singaporean, arrived in Adelaide on Wednesday, 6 February on a flight from Singapore.
Customs officers searched the man's laptop and portable flash drive and allegedly found objectionable material involving sexual acts.
He appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday, 7 February to face charges of importing pornography under Regulation 4A of the Customs (Prohibited Imports)Regulations and is due to reappear on Monday, 25 February.
The second man, a 23-year-old Malaysian, arrived in Adelaide yesterday (Thursday, 7 February) on a flight from Kuala Lumpur.
The man was allegedly in possession of a laptop computer that contained objectionable material that contravened Regulation 4A of the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956. He was arrested by Customs Investigators and is expected to appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court today.
Customs National Manager Investigations, Richard Janeczko, said that Customs was seeing an increase in interceptions of objectional pornography at the border.
"Customs has a responsibility to protect the Australian community by intercepting , investigating and prosecuting smuggling of offensive pornographic material and we take that role very seriously," Mr Janeczko said.
The maximum penalty for offences involving objectional pornography is $110,000 and where child pornography is involved there is a fine of $275,000 and/or 10 years imprisonment.
