Two men charged with pornography offences in Adelaide - Friday, 8th February 2008
Customs has charged two men with pornography importation offences after unrelated detections at Adelaide International Airport in the last 48 hours.
The first man, a 41-year-old Singaporean, arrived in Adelaide on Wednesday, 6 February on a flight from Singapore.
Customs officers searched the man's laptop and portable flash drive and allegedly found objectionable material involving sexual acts.
He appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday, 7 February to face charges of importing pornography under Regulation 4A of the Customs (Prohibited Imports)Regulations and is due to reappear on Monday, 25 February.
The second man, a 23-year-old Malaysian, arrived in Adelaide yesterday (Thursday, 7 February) on a flight from Kuala Lumpur.
The man was allegedly in possession of a laptop computer that contained objectionable material that contravened Regulation 4A of the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956. He was arrested by Customs Investigators and is expected to appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court today.
Customs National Manager Investigations, Richard Janeczko, said that Customs was seeing an increase in interceptions of objectional pornography at the border.
"Customs has a responsibility to protect the Australian community by intercepting , investigating and prosecuting smuggling of offensive pornographic material and we take that role very seriously," Mr Janeczko said.
The maximum penalty for offences involving objectional pornography is $110,000 and where child pornography is involved there is a fine of $275,000 and/or 10 years imprisonment.
As you can see, there is no mention of child porn.
