Well, I have a couple of former VA mates who are not that unhappy there at CAL.. There are always lots of people complaining, on pprune as well as in the real world.. I still have to find out how reliable these rants are. Dunno, maybe they're coming from some gilded realities.. No clue, whatsoever, where the truth lies

Can I make this clear..The following IS NOT a slur against China Airlines, just the facts as related to me. So don't shoot the paperboy!
In BKK recently on the way back from LHR. We stay in the same hotel as the CA crew and I had a few drinks with a couple of expat CA crew that the F/O knew.
Bottom line was that CA is moving toward a Nationialized Airline. That is; only Chinese speaking expats (Malay, etc) will remain in the left seat in the future and all other expat Capts will eventually be removed. Expat F/Os will be kept on the same terms as locals, but not upgraded.
Lots of guys from all fleets leaving soon to Asiana, Korean, SIA and mainland China.
Just one expat upgraded in the past couple of years (no more in the foreseeable future) and he was placed on local pay (USD5000pm after tax for a widebody ) with a huge cash bond. I asked why he was upgraded and was told that he was a "special case" Direct hire Capts are still employed on a decent income???, so the expat F/Os are leaving in droves.
Just the truth as related to me.

Hi,
just take a look at some European countries, especially Spain,France and the Netherlands.Regardless the fact that you might be a citizen of an EU country you will never get a cockpit-job there if you donīt speak their language.
If you are looking for a long-time career, why not learn chinese,at least to a level that you can understand and communicate some daily business?
The pay might not be the best in the world but compared to some European countries where life is for sure not cheaper itīs definitely not that bad.
cheers

Hi,
as an EU citizen myself I wonīt call myself an"EXPAT" if I would work in any country of the EU.
What I personally donīt understand is the continuous bashing of CAL.
Sure, there are better "career" airlines, but not everybody can join the company he likes most.Thatīs the bad reality.
I personally think,If you come from any European Low cost carrier or regional airline, going to CAL will be an improvement.
If I would have a job with well established carriers like BA,Iberia or LH I wouldnīt leave for sure.

Just curious to know the break down in monthly salary.
$5500 is monthly pay. Is there housing or other allowances on top of this?
What is the bond currently sitting on? Last I heard it was $12000US...
Cheers

A stupid question
Before everybody makes fun of me I know this might be a silly question.......
But in the on line application when I try to upload the photo it is always too big ( only allows 10k) but when I reduce the size of the photos I end up with a jumble of dots!!!
Any ideas of getting around this?
No smart arse replies like " Don't apply in the first place" Please I want to make up my own decision
Thanks!!

I had exactly the same problem with the photo, and I couldn't advance past that part of the application form ubtil I'd uploaded the photo. In the end I emailed them and they were quick to reply, but not with a satisfactory conclusion.Help!

Warning: Slightly off topic
May have to non-rev on China Airlines to get across the pond as loads on the US carriers are a bit tight. How bad is it being stuck in coach? Normally I get business on the domestic carrier but the passes we get on China are only for the cheap seats.

would these hours of flying a widebody be recognised by other airlines
do expats in taiwan have problems getting jobs elsewhere in the world because of the non icao issues?
would you recommend it as a job to someone with no jet time looking for a break?
yes i have read all the previous posts, anyone have anything new to add or an answer to my questions??
