Can a person like me become a pilot.
Hi there,
I am Joshua and i am from a middle class family. My ambition is to become a pilot but the total cost reaches around Rs.25 lakhs which is a impossible sum of amount for me.I am trying for almost 3 years to find a way but i dont find any.Even if i sell all the property that my family have it may hardly cross 4 lakhs. i have tried several banks but all let me down.but i am not ready to give up. Every time i see a plane flying over my head the zeal increases in me. Please let me know if you people know any way. Please am in desparate search.
Regards,
Joshua.

Do a Flt Dispatcher course, work for an airline as a Dispatcher make your money do your flying and apply back to your airline as a pilot.

Dear Josh
As of now there aren't any sponsorship programs in india. SIA did take indian pilots with CPL sometime back but they dont do it anymore since they are self sufficient with their own cadets.
Just wondering .. if you are 24 .. do you have a degree or a job? If yes.. Good .. Try to get a dispatcher licence and slowly build up the hours and the airline would allow you to jump into right seat with priority.
Bank loans definitely need collateral security and also they dont lend you more than 75-80% of the fees which i believe from your earlier posts is impossible. So now you know your only option.. dont lose hope and there is no reason in hurrying to ride the boom. Get a job, get a living, earn the moolah and then switch careers or you can even get a PPL and fly just for the "ZEAL" ... fancy of flight doesnt mean that you need a ATPL and fly A380 even a C150 will satisfy your thirst.
On the other hand if you still dont have a degree or a job... What were you thinking..
Getting into IAF would've been a golden chance but you missed a life time in that.. some things never care to turn back even if you run after them.

Dont lose hope.. Where there is a will there is a way
Your computer science masters will only prove useful later if you decide to be a pilot. As for now dont have any far fetched dreams.
Just to satisfy your thirst for flying let me tell you some simple steps which would take you near to your goal
1) Get yourself medically cleared for flying (this may take a long time because Class 1 medicals are done only in 2 places in india)
2) Get a DGCA Computer number (its free)
3) Get some books for pilot's exams and read it during free time.. If you feel good enough try your luck in the exams.
4) 1-2 yrs down the line, sign up at a flying club for PPL
By the time you get a PPL , i suppose your job profile would entitle you to get a pretty good amount from the banks as loan. Go abroad finish your 200hrs and come back!
If this sounds incredible.... you can always take up gliding or parasailing.. they are flying too at a fraction of the cost!
Senior members pardon me if im talking too much

Josh,
I totally agree with Haree. I was on the same boat, middle class family, no money in my pocket so I had to prove myself. I got my class one medical, once I knew that I was medically fit I joined ground school and passed my Indian RT and Indian CPL exams. That was my way of proving that I was serious about becoming a pilot and my grandmother was kind enough to mortgage her property for my education. That was 10 years ago and I haven't looked back since.
I wish there were any cadet programmers in India but it is not yet happening. Although there is a shortage of pilots in India but the airlines are not sponsoring any cadet pilots.
So I'd do what Haree said. First of all get yourself a class one medical. That way you can be sure that you can actually fly commercially. The Air Force Central Medical Establishment is giving dates after 4 months for initial medical. That will also give you time to think about your options.
You may want to contact some Indian schools like AAA, Orient, Karver aviation and see if they have any contacts with local banks where they can give you loans without any collateral (highly unlikely but worth a try).
May be with your IT background you can land yourself a job abroad that will pay you a lot more and you can use the spare cash towards your flight training.
Oh and if you are smart with your money you can easily finish all the checks and training for about 15-16 lakh rupees. So I am not sure where you get the figure of Rs25 lakhs from.

DesiPilot is bang on.....If you pass your medicals and clear all your DGCA CPL papers you can get a job as a Flt Dispatcher in one the airlines the pay is approx INR 25,000 this will give you serious info on operating jets and get you talking to all the pilots in your airline, when you do complete your flt training you will have stromg network to apply for jobs.

Hi... Before you jump in try and rate the market as spending a whopping 20 lakhs for CPL and then no jobs by then? I guess the aviation industry in India is hyped up and will settle down in a year's time. I've learnt that there are already 1500 - 1800 students sitting here in USA / Canda / Aus for their CPL licenses. Wonder if this indian aviation boom will dry in a year's time...

i could be wrong, but isnt it a better option for josh233 to probably go overseas (upon finding a job in the IT field), save up cash and do his training ? 20 lakh rupee is a lot of amount for middle-class guys like us. i came to aus to do my undergrad degree, finished it off, and have saved enough by working night shifts (12 am midnight to 8-9am in the morning) that has allowed me to finance more than half of my training. so, my dad was the one who paid for uni, and i am having to pay for the entire flying now.
i know that schools in South Africa are way cheaper to train oneself in compared to, lets say, the UK. however, i am not sure how the conversion would work, though. A couple of schools in Australia have started training Indian pilots who graduate as Indian CPL on completion.
i started flying back in 2002, when i was 20. i have flown odd hours during uni breaks to keep myself current, and upon graduation, have gone back to my flight school.
Save every cent you can. at the end of the day, when you would look back, you would consider yourself proud for being able to finance flying by yourself.
all the best. i was never demoranized by the fact my dad is unable to pay for the flying. atleast I CAN!

Yes you can become a pilot but training is just one step and you need to plan ahead as to where you hope to end up and where. Training in the US is very attractive to most and also the most economical and accessible. You'll no doubt require further conversions on your return and this shouldn't be seen as a quick convert as it can be quite an involved process in itself, cosider it as another module in your overall training syllabus.
If possible why not go to the US to train on a J-1 visa which will allow you to possible work as a flight instructor post training for about 1-2 years and build up your time. That will lead you upto ATPL and make the conversion process easier for you and allow you to get to the LHS of a jet quicker.
I'm no expert in terms of the US Visa stuff, so you'll need to source that information for yourself. But don't start training without a plan, engage mind and don't be too easily lead by your emotion. I wish you all the very best ....
