Thinking of China?

A friend of mine who works in China sent me this true account of a situation that occured recently. This guy is Mr Cool; he has wrestled wild wenches from Fiji, pulsed with Polynesian Princesses from Pago Pago and tamed Tongan temptresses. Nothing rattles his cage, but this did;

The day after I spoke to you I was on my bike to meet a few friends for a day of cycling & mucking around. On my way to meet them a stupid Chinese s**ty crossing the road (not looking as usual) ran then stopped dead in her tracks in front of me & I had no option but to glance her leg with my front wheel....ever so lightly I might add as I was going uphill at the time. She put on a great act of Acadamy award proportions and was clearly not hurt in anyway as impact was not much more than walking pace. I chuckled because I thought she was deliberately acting by falling over but she sized everything up instantly after seeing a foreigner & suddenly had more sinaster things on her mind...you guessed it - money!!! She refused to get up & was shouting & finger pointing & claiming she had a badly injured leg. I couldn't believe it & in no time a staring crowd was circling. I tried to help her get up but she pushed me away & kept shouting & causing a huge scene. She refused to budge & remained sitting on the road looking like an absolute fool. I thought 'f**k you' & was about to do a runner but realised they would track me down as being the only non Chinese around here most people know where I work etc so thought that may make things worse. Her family rolled up & the abuse continued & I was starting to lose my cool as suddenly I was guilty of a horrible act even though no-one saw it & she was a f**kin dopey Chinese crossing the road while not looking while suddenly altering her course & speed...f**k it pissed me off. Then her family said I must take her to hospital, I said 'What for, theres nothing wrong with her'. I got on to the phone to a Chinese friend who came to meet me with my boss. We all went to the hospital & I was shaking my head in disbelief at how such a trivial incident has been blown up into titanic proportions & this f**kin rice growing peasant s**ty is getting away with all this crap. The doctor examined her & couldn't find anything wrong with her!!!! Ahhhhhh!!!!!!!! isn't it greattttttttt. But the family then said she now suddenly has heart problems & unless some money is given they will go thru every hospital test & other hospitals if necessary to prove she has heart problems....f**kin comical. The family demanded 1,000 rmb (2 months salary for average Chinese here), my boss paid them 800rmb, everyone was happy, except me, & we all left including the f**kin acting s**ty who incredibly made a miracle recovery & got into a departing taxi without any trouble on her own where as 15 minutes b4 she had 3 family members helping her out of a car to see a doctor. I was f**kin spewing but surprisingly my boss was calm & undeterred by the whole thing. Mind you, 800rmb is nothing to him...apart from owning a huge ****** he has many businesses in many counties in this province. They explained its quite normal & this is very common in China. I told them I'm spewing because everyone assumes I'm at fault when she clearly was not hurt as the 'collision' wouldn't have knocked over a 2 year old & she acted the whole thing from the start for extortion on seeing a foreigner and the last 2 hours has been totally unnecessary & a total waste of time for everyone. They said don't worry about it & took me out to lunch!! I find Chinese can be really nice & hospitable when you know them but many are f**kin lying cheating a**eholes. Still pisses me off when I think about it.

Still want to work there? And before you hit the "post reply" button; been there, got the t-shirt. Its for real. More real than Big Brother!!

Quite a rant!
Fact is, that same scenario has played out in many other cities around the World.

Danger

Heard that before, Ivan sorry to hear about that but frankly that's why I use Taxi's over there and several other places. Of course you may need to have own Transport Bike's included, so then you have to risk the gauntlet of this type of thing.
Hope it sorts it self out though,

An interesting use of an everyday story to have a right racist rant at pprune's expense. That story is told in every low life bar in the world. Not impressed!

kwaiyai very true JUST DO NOT DRIVE in many parts of the world, let alone China, where you may not have any rights if the local cop plans to make an example out of you to the rest of the xpats. Same goes for parts of the ME.

Clearly V/F.U. you are a true expat; with all the insights on living in a 'foreign' country. In your condo in SIN/DBX/HKK you have all the experiences in the world with which to draw upon.

Well, this guy lives in a city in China of a million-plus people where there are no Tescos, McDs or Irish Pubs. He is the sole non-native. He went there for the adventure, the desire to experience a fascinating culture and to teach English- for which they clearly are craving for- and at a salary which your daughter in SYD/ LAX/LHR wouldn't even get out of bed for.

He has cycled extensively on his 'flying seagull' bike which was given to him because he refused to be picked up for school by a driver. Most recently he cycled several hundred kilometres around the Three Gorges Dam project. You have done that haven't you?

You would knock a Chinese peasant down in your BMW and keep driving. Clearly low-life bars are your haunt.

You really are impressed by your own opinion and don't know when to stop do you? I don't live in a condo but have spent many happy times in China, just recently a month in Wuhan and lived with people who work on the 3 gorge dam. The people and the place was beautiful and friendly and in one month in Hubei I never met another foreigner. So to say I don't know what I am talking about is ridiculous. You on the other hand are only telling one side of a very RACIST story. For the benefit of those who don't know the extortionate RMB800 your friend allegedly paid equates to just $95(US). I am quite sure thats a lot less than you spent in the bar last night! Sad to read you also think that a place is only worth living in if it as McDonalds or Tesco's. Once again the story is one I could repeat for every city in the world. A friend of mine got badly mugged in New York once, so never work in the US guys. Yeah right!!! By the way where is DBX?

What a wonderful panacea the almighty $ is, universally.

At least the police weren't involved - nor the courts.

Can you imagine how much this might have cost him, had it happened in the US (or Australia)?

the other side of the moon!

interesting story!
was watching an accident in china, a girl on a bicycle got hit by a car, at first i thought she must be dead, as she was catapulted right over the top of the car and landed hard on the concrete. she managed to get back on her feet after some 15 seconds of shock. then the driver of the car got out, a female in uniform, don't ask me what uniform, police, customs..... i don't know. shouting at the girl and seemingly telling her to get lost!!
this is the other side of the moon!
by the way china has about 650 to 700 people killed every day in road accidents!!

ofcorse this is a problem.
just last week on TV they were showing their efforts to make life on chinas streets safer, so they will reform their way of testing the driving skills of applicants for a drivers licence, at the moment they just have to demonstrate being able to reverse a car for few meters.

Don't know where that was shown on TV but it is simply not true. The driving test is quite difficult and in some places requires a residential course before a test can be applied for. The driving may not reflect this however!!

last week BBC- world-TV had it on its program for 15 mins. maybe it is difficult to do the test and it is demanding now, but as you could see on their report it is a simple matter.
