Crew Shortage MAS

Apparently quite a few flights on MH are delayed or "re-scheduled" due to lack of crew and/or crew reaching max permitted hours.

Not very good for passengers on their flights.

Not very good for all concerned.

Crew Shortage in MAS

So far other than the famous JNB flight, not aware of other "rescheduled" or "retimed" flights.

If there are, MAS flt ops is doing a fantastic job. After all, this is their speciality area , covering up.

Anyway, the MD did say in the press that they were not that short of crew and that replacements are on the way. Sadly, this man who has been in MAS for a long long time cannot see that he has been conned.

I agree, not very good for all concerned.

MAS have not to worry for crew shortage, they just open an interview/recruiting indon pilot non GA, as GA & MH has a joint operation/problem and same mision demolish the company

If they are experiencing pilot shortage, I don't understand why they're not calling me for an interview, they sure have my application somewhere.

The are very short of pilots NOW and are more concerned with getting flights in the air on a daily basis and the situation now is due the short sightedness of MAS flight ops management(or lack of it). Giving you an interview now will not solve there present problems and you will be good to go only in about 2 years for operations(less if you already have a licence of course)...also things work in slow motion in MAS so just hold your breath and hang in there... maybe try AA, probably call you a day after you apply

Flights are delayed on a daily basis and its normal for 7 to 10 flights to be without crew everyday.No delays buddy, its called re scheduled!I was told most flights on the 747 go with 3 to 4 captains on the long haul routes(some of whom have already busted their yearly hours)

Yes, I heard about those rescheduled flights. On one, we had the former DDFO, good ole Joe, on the CM1 seat, and on the CM2 seat was the former DFO, ye ole camel. Nice of them to have rescued the flight considering it was the current SVP that removed them.

Whilst other airlines are expanding, we cant because of this predicament. Going off tangent a bit, recently CAL put on an ad in our local papers trying to recruit pilots. They are looking for FOs, young ones with about 1000 hrs for FO positions on 744. They are also looking for Capts on 744s. For Capts they prefer ex IPs/AEs only to replace some of theirs that are retiring. This is an exception as they have stopped recruiting for captains for 744s. (Local pool sufficient). You begin to wonder why Malaysian local papers.

We may loose more people and more and more flights will be recheduled.

Retimings/Cancellations

Be really weary and cautious as to whom you talk to about this whole matter as the "gomen" of M'sia looks at the problem very seriously nowadays....about time they do....but the word around is that the "pilots" are doing this just for personal reason which is really crappy! Management, especially those idiots are still telling the whole world that MAS has "enough strength" to operate and well, the truth is out there and it's coming out....

My parents flew MAS on Monday night to LHR and were 2 hours late leaving because of a Missing FO. Either due sickness/duty but another got called in and was apologising for delays (poor bloke had been at home watching tv when the call came)

They also had 2 Captains on the flight. Still.....not near as bad as JNB

Six (6) more resignations as of this week.

With more and more "re-scheduled" flights on the roster and the "intelligent crew management system" not being able to cope, even DENIAL has its limits.

Any hints on who the 6 are and where these brave 6 are going?

Heard that the MoU also stalemate already. Final offer by company. Apparently now it's over to arbitration.

triplebogey and MAStake, do you think really that with 10 Indon F/O for B744 MAS won't minimize their re-schedule flight??? and increase income to MAS

The situation sucks for all involved.

1) Company loses money and gets a bad reputation

2) Management is overworked, one hand trying to cover up, the other trying to frantically shift flights around (reschedule, grovel, whatever)

3) Pilots are working maximum hours and getting called on their off days to help rescue flights, but what's the incentive to do so? A letter of appreciation is it? Mass e-mailed by our SGMFO's secretary, he really knows how to make things personalised

The vicious circle goes round and round. What's the correct solution?

It seems as though MAS is going to (or already is) set the role model of airlines that aren't willing to reward pilots their "market value".
For years now, pilots have have had their conditions decreased, by airline (mis)managers, based on "market value"...."There's an over supply of pilots.......lots of pilots available....we've got thousands of applications on our books...etc".
Salaries and allowances were slashed, travel benefits reduced or removed, and in general we have been treated like dirt.
All the while though, the numbers of "managers" have increased out of all proportion - there's a "manager" for just about everything that can be imagined, all on premium incomes and side benefits, but seemingly doing nothing more than keeping a chair warm when not in a "meeting".

The increasing pilot shortage was forewarned some 3 or 4years ago, but instead of trying to hold on to those pilots they already had, management felt it necessary to justify THEIR positions by taking away as much as they could from OTHER staff.

Resultantly, company loyalty was rewarded with abuse.
We've had it beaten out of us.
Doing a favour - eg. agreeing to work on an "Off" day - was met with further abuse, and no reciprocation.
It's reached the point now, where the ONLY way experienced pilots can be retained (or attracted) is by offering superior financial incentives.
The "clever" managers have, in fact, defeated themselves, and done pilots a favour - and their company a dis-service - by now having to spend DOLLARS for the few CENTS they've saved!
