SQ Commuting

Is it possibile? Both mainline and Cargo?

Looking at doing it from SYD, when does yor staff travel kick in, 6 months? Do they consider the subject if requested in roster publication?

Any help welcomed?

Officially there is no such thing in the airline - but then the management are not too concerned where you live - just be there for the duty. Now, it is a hell of a lot easier to do if you are on the 747, or the 345. The 777 - thats a bit more of a challenge - guys do commute to Perth, but it takes alot more planning and is not so often. Is that any help?

Yes nice one. How many trips do you do on the 744 a month?

Also do you know what sort of entry minima's they want. I have 4400hrs 2000 jet and 1000 turboprop, 27 with a marketing degree?

How practical is it to live over the causeway in or close to JB if you work for SIA Cargo on B744? I have heard several replies from 777 mainline guys but I guess the schedules and slip patterns are very different for them.

What is the ground transit time from JB to SIN? Can you do a standby duty from JB?

PM me if you prefer.

Thanks.

I have flown with just one Malaysian F/O who lives in JB. No expat to my knowledge lives in JB. It is a bit of a dump in my opinion. I have been over there twice and that was enough although those who play Golf find it worthwhile going over.

Pin Head You would be mad to even consider trying to commute from Sydney. Yes a few do from Perth and most have unlimited ID 90's You if SQ Cargo would get none and only 4 pa if Mainline which on B777 would make for an interesting lifestyle.

Sydney Flights are always Full and you would have a nervous breakdown in no time at all trying to get on sub load and being at the very bottom of a long list being a new joiner.

Roster requests to help you commute??? Ha Ha.Ha This is Asia

I also have an interview coming up. Anyone have any details on the interview process. Is it as technical as the CX interview? How is the sim evaluation? And for us yanks how do we get company certified log books. I have worked for four airlines and none ever gave me any company certified logbooks or documents with my flying hours on it. I even called the commuter that I worked for from 94-97 and they said that they purged my data so they don't even have record of the planes that I flew there except the last type? Any Ideas?
Thanks

AADriver - Your own personal flying log books that you have filled out as you go will normally do but SIA like to see company stamps and signatures in them, especially when you leave a company, just to verify that the log book records are real.

Guys, I think somewhere in the past there has been some info on the interview porocess.

But here is a brief missive.

If what I heard about the CX interview is true, then this is not like CX! It is a 3 part process ( well four really because you have to get by "Joakilla"!! she is the secretary who gathers all the relevant documents, issues the application forms and basically checks your logbooks - a bit of dragon acting a little above her station).

First interview is with two or three management pilots - failrly strait forward - one chap asks about personal history - here such questions as why you want to join, are you aware of the cost of living, driving cars, etc etc. The other chap may go into some generic technical questions - really nothing OTT. Oh yes, all interviews (except with the dragon) are jeopardy.

Get thru the first and it's on to the sim, which is a 3 minute walk away. Absolutely strait forward - very procedural with FD's on ( except for steep turns), AT on, and for the 777 the TAC on. Except for the horror of doing it in some a/c type sim you have never flown, really it should not be a problem ( but a few have come short). Pass that, they offer you to go for the medical and theoretically that is that, although do be aware that the final say really is with the wonderful government, who the airline actually apply to, for your work permit.

Hope this is of use. Also be aware that the SARS paycut is still applicable - nearly two years after it was shoved down our throats the damn pay cut is still on the payslip - down right insulting!

Great info CRDW,

Next question, do you think I will get a look in with 4400hrs TT 2000hrs Regional jet and 1000hrs Turboprop or will they still insit on 2500 jet?

They can be a bit of a stickler on hours - some guys have come short where they claimed command hours whilst under training in the left seat, put those hours into their total, had actually joined the ailine when some clerk checked up on the claimed hours and all hell broke loose - but for the sake of another 500hrs get them, and have no hassles - they will still be recruiting this time next year and the year after. And even another SARS or perhaps this time "bird flu" outbreak occurs, it really is, in reflection, a minor hiccup in the long run.!!
