Malaysia ATC
Regarding Airspace in Malaysia and Region , as well ATC phraseology , what are the standards used by Malaysia ,Singapore,Thailand, Indonisia and others in the region?
Is it based on ICAO ?

Once you get used to the local accent, you will find that the ATC phraseology is quite standardized with the rest of the world. You will most likely not have any problem with the Singapore ATC. Very professional. With the Indon ATC, get used to the word "Golof" the local way of pronouncing Golf.

They are all quite professional except Kota Kinabalu, they have got to be the worst in the country. When aircraft is at 10 miles from the runway. nobody is able to cross the runway or clear any aircraft for immediate takeoff.
Horrible coordination in terms of the keeping the traffic flowing. But the funny thing is, "Kinabalu Director" and "Kinabalu Radar" are doing a fantastic job. Its the guys at the tower thats screwing it up.
Hv a jolly time flying

It really shouldn't be any different...they rotate positions don't they? I don't know whether the Radar and Tower are co-located.
Kinabalu isn't all that bad...Lumpur radar is. To my knowledge I've never had to hold over SIN airspace no matter how busy Chagi was. I've had to hold for up to 1/2 an hour all over KL airspace no matter if you're coming from North or East or South.
Ironically they clear you for 10 miles final high speed after that.
And then you have to slow down right before finals because they overestimated how fast you were.

Moderate, Modest & Mild.

Well, to my knowledge, I have had holding in SIN airspace.
If you happen to get some holding, or speed reduction what's the big deal?
Try flying outside those countries - it's an every day - often every flight - experience.
To answer your question, Eddie - yes, the phraseology is ICAO standard.
(Some of the comments posted here indicate how the experience drain from MAS is beginning to show! I'll bet fuel burns are on the increase as well.)

"i think its time for the kl guys to open up both runways for landings....like in BKK n CGK
No way KLIA can cope with handling the airport like Bangkok. BKK do a fine job of making full use of both runways. Here in KL, I think they just got to close one runway just to make the airport look busy! And when it actually IS quite busy at peak times they STILL want to use single runway! RW closed for maintenance as stated in the Notam...always but what are they doing everyday month after month?? You don't see anyone there.
The best part is when the airport is dead quiet and taxiways practically empty and you taxi from one side to another and you got to change ground control frequencies like a busy Bangkok or Heathrow. (as if this guy is so busy with his sector)
I invite an ATC guy to explain all of this, or perhaps I should just take the initiative to visit the tower huh?
Ok, rant over.

The last time I spoke to an ATC guy in KUl he said all the app. controllers were qualified. The equipment was installed, but not certified. The radar doesn't go "Beep, Beep" when an a/c enters the NTZ.
They do conduct simultaneous landings on both runways but only on request an maybe after considering seperation with other a/c.
Wrt take-off seperation standards, they said they follow what's in the book. "We follow SOPs, just like you." So unless operators can convince them otherwise, expect no changes.

Guys,
How would you interprete this ATC clearance... You are cleared Miri Radar 1 departure 4000ft heading 270? Do you turn at 1600 ft and continue climb to 4000 ft before turning? This happens in Miri all the time.

The new KLIA is a massive disappointment as regards ATC and especially the delays on take-off. I used to operate out of Subang and the pre-take off holding was at times horrendous , but at least it had the excuse of being a single runway operation.
I fully expected the twin runways of KLIA to be a great improvement with its LHR type one for takeoff -one for landing. Now, ifI see 6 aircraft in front of me I expect 20 minutes to departure. It has to be Approach refusing to accept more than 1 departure every 3-4 minutes.
The strict procedure of '1st come 1st served' at the holding point does not help either. If a policy of , say , 1 North departure , followed by 1 south departure ( or east/west ...whatever ) was agreed , the flow could be much improved and safely too.
Arrivals could be much improved as well if they only gave people strict speeds to maintain at certain points.Instead we have seperations of up to 10 miles , and near-panic if it is less than 5.
Oh , those Gatwick controllers deserve medals !!
Pls understand , I am not trying to be critical here , because I think KLIA has the potential to be one of the great airports of the world , but it has to stop thinking Subang.
I agree about BKK , they are very good , and their runways are much closer together and there is also extensive runway crossing to be done , but they trust the aircrew to think safety and respond accordingly. It works pretty well.
C'mon KLIA , get your act together.

To QNH1013...
I'm not one of the guys who change you over to other freq while taxying on empty space, we're in the same boat/ cockpit I must say... Have you ever wondered why in the world at the portion of TWY H near S3, you'd be seeing a small little tower ( more like a makeshift hut.. ) by the corner? For your info, there're people in it monitoring our movements on that side....KLIA/MAB/DCA claimed that they have the "tallest" control tower in the world and in actual fact they can't see movement at that portion of taxyway...it's blocked by the satelite structure!!!! What a design planning joke......!
I kid you not, this is the truth about why we have to change to a few freqs in KLIA!
Sorry KLIA ATCs...you can run but you CAN'T hide no more....!
P.s That goes to all the pilots as well....

Thanks geo7E7,
That's very interesting info. Then I agree that a frequency change is required as I agree a ground controller must be able to visually monitor us at all times or otherwise have surface movement radar.

geo7E7,
Sorry to rain on your parade, but the small tower that you mentioned is a lookout post for the airport firefighters & also acts as a standby tower (talk about contingency planning). The ATC tower in KLIA is built very tall to accomodate 4 satelite terminals & 2 main terminal buildings (now that is design planning!).You must remember the airport is built to meet the needs of the country for 150 years or more.Hence the abundance of spare access lands surrounding the airport.
Yes, the tower is equipped with a surface movement radar!Surprised?Well don't be.Then why the need for the frequencies?Well, with all the traffic that we have now, especially peak times, the obvious needs are for more frequencies bands.A no brainer really.
Personally, I find the ATC guys here are of a very good standard the only thing that is holding them back is lack of exposure & also they are bounded by their SOP's & this I believe is their way of erring on the safe side.

EY777...
Thanks for the update but based on personal experience, did talk to those guys up there on that small "lookout" tower while taxying next to it.... but again that was my last trip couple of lunar years ago...! Are you the ONLY guy with that rating in EY now? Must be...., lucky man you are!
