Thanx for the info, but the last doubt I had is still in the air,,
are they going to withdraw the 73´s as the 320s are coming or they are still keeping them? is there any 737 left to come in? and finally, for when are the orders estimated to arrive? thankyou very much

bluefalcon,

As far as I am aware any decision has not been made public.

What is apparant is the direct operating costs of the old 733 is becoming prohibitive worldwide, maintenance of the 20 yr old aircraft, and fuel prices are pricing these aircraft out of the market.

Which ever why the go, I would see the 733 being replaced in a similar process like Silkair.

AirAsia are planning to place 40 firm orders and another 40 options for delievery from 2006.

So I would say until 2006 they will keep the 737-300s flying!

IT IS OFFICIAL!

80 FIRM ORDERS FOR A320s
No options announced!!!

The 733s will transfer to the Indo and Thai operations.

First A320 to arrive July 2005.

Not a bad deal for the AA pilots! Boeing and Airbus type ratings all round!

Does Air Asia have pilot bases in Jakarta and Bangkok as well as Kuala Lumpur?

Touch'n'oops,

Can you advise your "official" source as niether Airbus or Air Asia have issued a press release to that effect.

Saw some speculation in the press, but no official word from either Airbus or Air Asia.

Shaman,

This is what they tell their potential Indonesian recruits:

Set up a Jakarta (and Bandung) crew base.
60hrs per 2 weeks per month for rosters away from Indonesia.
80hrs per month for rosters within Indonesia (when it comes).
Fly in Indonesia using AWAir AOC (which they bought for US$2)...

But I don't get it. In Indonesia, a non-Indonesian AOC holder cannot fly domestically using its flight numbers, regardless if they partner up a domestic airline through equity holdings or not.

Does this mean that Air Asia (Indonesia) will fly with QZ flight numbers?

Although it seems as though it will be Airbus going to AA, there has been no 'official' release/statement.

How will this effect all the contract guys through Parc and other angencies who have forked out the 30K for 73 TR's.

I would say the guys getting the 737 Type ratings from Parc etc. Will continue to for another year or so. And the phasing out of the B737 fleet will take quite a while I think.
The new order for Airbus/Boeing won't start arriving until 2006.
And 2006 was in an official statement.

Touch'n'oops is probably an insider who works for AA so might know its Airbus prior to an announcement.

Hi all

I do work for AA. Airbus and AirAsia announced this to staff quite a while ago.

I have had a couple of chin wags with Tony and seems like Airbus gave us a seriouly good deal. 5 years free maintence and parts. Plus the aircraft are cheaper than Boeings (this info. is rumour from inside AA... So it is not gospel). Figures

As for the Parc Aviation lot. I doubt many of these guys are going to be around longer than two years. Get the hours and bug out! That's the idea

Airbuses phased in over 4 years and first one arrives in july 2005. Type ratings provide by Airbus... How nice!!!

As opposed to the one at the national carrier. If you say "Selamat Pagi" without adding "Da Toad" you will be totally ignored.

From Airbus

AIRASIA GOES FOR AIRBUS A320
DECEMBER 17, 2004

AirAsia, the region’s fastest growing low-cost carrier announced today that it has selected Airbus as its future supplier, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the purchase of 40 A320s plus a further 40 options. The MOU signing was undertaken by Mr. Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia and Mr. John Leahy, Chief Commercial Officer of Airbus at a ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia today. Deliveries of the first A320s will commence in late 2005 and continue through until 2011.

AirAsia is a new customer for Airbus in Asia Pacific and the latest in a recent series of low-cost carriers from the region to select A320 Family aircraft. Over 340 Airbus A320 Family aircraft are already in service with 30 airlines in Asia-Pacific, with total orders from the region exceeding 420 aircraft. The A320 Family has a widespread reputation for high dispatch reliability even on short hops, with wide aisles facilitating quick turnarounds for efficient operations.

“AirAsia is ever committed to offer a quality product and a quality service to its guests. The new A320 aircraft would be introduced gradually into AirAsia Group’s entire fleet, which includes our operations in Thailand through Thai AirAsia, and Indonesia, through the newly re-launched AWAIR,” said Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia.

“Over the past 12 months, the A320 Family has proven to be the outstandingly popular choice with both start-up and established low-cost carriers in the Asia Pacific region and I am delighted to welcome AirAsia to this dynamic group. With its superb economics and high passenger appeal, the A320 is sure winner that will further spur AirAsia’s success,” said John Leahy, Chief Commercial Officer, Airbus.

The A320 offers optimum cabin comfort in its class, reflecting a common commitment that is found in all Airbus aircraft. And like all the passenger aircraft that Airbus produces today, it features many modern technology features at no extra charge – such as advanced fuel-saving aerodynamics, including winglets, widespread weight-saving carbonfibre composites, and pilot and maintenance-friendly fly-by-wire controls and centralised maintenance.

Widely accepted as the industry standard, the best–selling Airbus A320 Family comprises a variety of seating configurations that allow for a customized lay-out depending on the airliner’s needs. All of them share the same airframe – only the fuselage lengths are different – and the same cockpits, systems and engines, delivering unmatched operational commonality and savings to airlines.

A leading aircraft manufacturer with the most modern and comprehensive product line on the market, Airbus is a global company with design and manufacturing facilities in France, Germany, the UK, and Spain as well as subsidiaries in the U.S., China and Japan. Headquartered in Toulouse, France, Airbus is an EADS joint Company with BAE Systems.

AIRASIA SEALS 80 AIRCRAFT DEAL - AIRBUS A320 PICKED FOR NEW FLEET

Sepang, 17 December 2004 –AirAsia, a leading low fare no frills airline in Southeast Asia, has signed a memorandum of understanding with European plane manufacturer, Airbus, for 40 firm orders of the A320 aircraft, and another 40 purchase right.

The signing of Memorandum of Understanding between AirAsia Berhad, represented by its Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Tony Fernandes, and Airbus which is represented by Mr. John Leahy, Airbus’s Chief Commercial Officer, today marks the conclusion of months of negotiations following AirAsia’s Request For Proposal from Boeing and Airbus for a proposed acquisition of up to 80 new aircraft, consisting of 40 firm orders and 40 purchase rights.

Delivery of the new A320s is expected to take place over a period of up to 5 years with an average of 1 aircraft per month, starting from January 2006. AirAsia at present operates 24 Boeing 737-300s with a 148 seat configuration, of which 19 are leased, and 5 owned. The airline will gradually shift its operations to the new aircraft type with new sets of engines to replace its current fleet. AirAsia would operate a mixed fleet during this transition period.

The A320 family features the most modern design, the widest and most comfortable cabin, and the highest degree of operational commonality of any single-aisle aircraft. Widely accepted as the industry standard, the best-selling Airbus A320 Family comprises a variety of seating configurations that allow for a customized lay-out depending on the airliner’s needs. AirAsia’s A320s will be outfitted with the airline’s signature red carpet and plush leather seats.

The Airbus A320 has a 180 seating capacity, with a flying range of up to 5,700km/3,000nm. It features the latest fly-by-wire technology and is in widespread service on five continents.

Financing for AirAsia’s Airbus A320 purchase is expected to be concluded soon. AirAsia is presently in discussion with the European Export Credit Agencies.

"AirAsia begins yet another new chapter with our new aircraft acquisition. We are excited to be the first Malaysian registered airline to operate the Airbus A320s. Our partnership with Airbus will ensure a reliable and continuous supply of aircraft to meet our growth and regional expansion plans.

The Airbus modern aircraft is designed for reliability, as well as easy and cost-effective maintenance based on standards approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Transport Canada . This contributes to AirAsia’s cost optimization policy through lower maintenance costs. In addition, the Airbus A320’s improved fuel efficiency, and higher passenger capacity, will enable AirAsia to enjoy considerable cost savings and hence a much lower cost of operations on a per seat basis.

AirAsia is ever committed to offer a quality product and a quality service to its guests. The new aircraft would be introduced gradually into AirAsia Group’s entire fleet, which includes our operations in Thailand through Thai AirAsia, and Indonesia , through the newly re-launched AWAIR.”
- Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia Berhad

“Over the past 12 months, the A320 family has proven to be the outstandingly popular choice with both start-up and established low-cost carriers in the Asia-Pacific region and I am delighted to welcome AirAsia to this dynamic group. With its superb economics and high passenger appeal, the A320 is a sure winner that will further spur AirAsia's success"
- John Leahy, Chief Commercial Officer, Airbus
