Hahaha! I was waiting to see who would pick up on that cue...

Come on dammit!

I always look back fondly at the good folks of SFC. I had a really good time there...

I'm thinking about applying again for this. I applied just after I graduated (24 years old then) with a BSE in Aerospace Engineering from Michigan and did not get an interview. From then till now, I've been working in the US as an engineer and I got a PPL here and have been flying cross-countries for fun, enjoying the scenery and exploring small air strips.

I'm considering applying again as I am just so itchy to fly and explore the world. I turn 26 this year, Singaporean and served NS. Just what are my chances now as compared to when I applied immediately after university?

Me Too. I'm still waiting...

Oh the lovely joyce!

Carl,
I guess you did not get called up before was because you did not hit the minimum age. With your background, you should stand a pretty good chance. (though I haven't really met anyone who graduated from the states yet, or maybe I have but did not know, so I don't know if it's good.) Now that you have work experience, it makes it all better. Are you in the states now? It is preferable that when you apply, you be physically in Singapore, to avoid any complications. That's what they prefer I guess. There was one person who was located in australia before and they did not call him up because of his work commitments, etc and they had to accomodate his schedule instead of vice versa. That happened before so I don't know what they will do now. (I don't really know the details of it all but that's just a surface note to take.) You have your PPL in the states? By the way, it does not bump you up stages for the CPP. You still have to start from scratch.

To the rest,
Waiting is key...keep yourself occupied, don't think about it too much. When it comes, it comes.

All the best to everyone!

Any other guys that have gone for med. during March and waiting for result? So far, it seems like only yuan_7, winn and me. Hmm...given usually a 5-6wks between the courses, I reckon that the coming cse should commence either 28 Apr or 5 May. Either case, it's going to be 1 mth or less away real soon. Hopefully SIA calls the next few days, I need to give my company 1 mth notice. J****, pls hurry.

I disagree. He's more than that. He's a DAMNED good man.

He has a heart of gold. But his role requires that he wear a mask and be mostly the one to kick butt regularly.

It pains him to no end to see lazy cadets, especially those who cannot appreciate how fortunate they are to be in a cadet program and fast tracked to the right seat much to the envy and even scorn of regular folks who go the hard way.

Speaking of which, bad news travels fast. Word out is that the latest ATPL results has thrown up a new underachiever - 2 (yes TWO) marks for Met Theory. What do you do with characters like that? This cadet being ex-RSAF makes it even harder to give him the benefit of the doubt.

BillKill,
I surely hope for that first interview. I just wonder what kind of questions they would ask me. Most of the questions mentioned on this forum seem OK. I am in the US now, but my company intends to post me back to Singapore in the near future, maybe June, so I am hoping to go for the interviews when I am back in Singapore. The only not-so-cool thing about being in Singapore is the undeveloped GA scene, no freedom in renting a plane and going where ever you like, always having to report to ATC.

It doesn't matter if I have to start from scratch, I enjoy it actually, spending more time in the 172 and not having to pay for it! Hahahaha. I'm planning a 1500 km cross country next month, going round the Great Lakes, to Osh Kosh (unfortunately the air show is only in July), Milwaukee, a fly-by of downtown Chicago (VFR corridor only, I am not IR, I hope SIA will pay for it in the future!) and back to my alma mater in Ann Arbor. Sigh, will be burning one month's salary on aircraft rental and fuel, but heck it, as long as I enjoy myself! will be taking along my RSAF friend (non-pilot) and his new bride.

I was just wondering, are many SIA pilots also GA enthusiasts??? I would love to meet the GA enthusaists in SIA and we could join those epic journeys that are always featured on wingsoverasia.com.

Hey guys,

Anyone having their 2nd interview on the 4th Apr? Hey Carlvinson, I'm a GA enthusiast too...would love to get endorsed and rent a caravan or PC12(a warrior or 172 is a little slow and cramped for my liking), take some friends and go exploring...I did my flight training in Sydney, its a great country to fly, lots of things to see...love exploring those country airstrips...

Cheers!

Yes, I love the PC12, it's a magnificent airplane, single turbo prop. A PC12 could possibly do a round-the-world trip, something I'd like to look into......

I'm applying to SIA when I get posted back in June or something, right now still stuck in the US with my dumb job. It least it pays for 100LL

yes its a great plane, think i'll only have to do a type rating on it since its under 5700kgs.TAS at about 310, ceiling around 30000",range 1000nm with pax, got a free turbine engine, really powerful. saw it at the airshow, the thing thats good is the pitch lever and throttle are combined, so you dont have to worry about manually adjusting the CSU and throttle. Cabin is a little small though, even a small sized fellow like me had to hunchback inside, though once ur seated its pretty comfy. Short field performance isint as good as the caravan though...that thing can literally stop on a dime...haha.. Hows it like flying there? lots of airspace to consider right? Should be some awesome scenic flights over there...I suggest you send in ur application about a month before u return and include a singapore mailing address if you have one...they take awhile to reply sometimes...

Think you're describing FADEC there. FADEC eliminates those manual throttle, prop pitch and mixture settings.... and simply replacing it with a lever throttle, airliner performance in a small plane! FYI, one cool development is the Thielert retrofit diesel engine for DA40 and 172. Gets rid of the mixture and throttle, and puts in a throttle lever instead, like an airliner! much better fuel efficiencies and power output.

On the contrary, flying here is GREAT, not much airspace worries if you're not flying near the main B airspace near big international airports like LAX, JFK, ORD.... Most of the airspace around where I fly is E, no big deal. most american ATCs are quite fun to talk to, getting clearance is not much of a hassle. Flying VFR, you don't even need to file a plan with flight service station(though in the flight school they make it mandatory for X-countries). Pretty much like a car in the sky, fly to where ever you want. in my 1500km trip I got planned next month, we're headed for an island resort airstrip in Lake Huron for the day then fly by Chicago's shore line with Lake Michigan, so there's a bit of airspace complexities there, but I'm going to take the easy way and use the VFR corridor, after all, I'm just a VFR PPL. Nice thing though is that VFR PPLs can fly night here. will be timing the fly by Chicago at dusk.

you know what, if i could have any prop aircraft in the world, I'd take the diamond DA42 diesel. a beautiful hunk of aircraft with great performance.

yeah, i'll surely put in the application a month before I get back. my only worry is that i'm just a FAA PPL SEL, no special ratings or fancy suffixes to my certificate!! how to compete with all those CPL/IR, ATPL, jet type-rating, 777-rating, A310-rating, starship enterprise-rating.....?!?!?!

RoSs|gnoL 30th Mar 2006 04:28

The Daimond is pretty nice too, really economical but too small for my liking. I prefer larger props with bigger payloads and range, the last time i tried planning a flight from sydney to gold coast it would have cost $1600 round trip in a duchess - way too expensive even when splitting amongst 4 persons. Don't you need a NVFR to fly at night? The WX over there generally good for VFR? I wouldn't worry about not having an ATPL or CPL though. Just having a PPL would already prove to them your interest.

Night VFR is included in basic PPL training here. Sometimes navigating at night is easier than day because it's real easy to match the patches of light on the ground with the sectionals. Looking for the airport is also very easy, just look for the white/green flashing light.

WX is generally good here. Now that spring wx is here, it's a real pleasure to get up there in the sky. Great visibility, high ceilings but winds can be gusty.
