You'll definitely have to go sit in that musky smelling computer lab at SAA and take all 14 subjects. Pls remember to empty your bladder prior to the exam, esp the long ones like Met and R nav.

fromdgrndup 12th Aug 2014 22:43

Thanks guys and I guess CAAS won't let you take the exams either unless you are going to be hired by an SG carrier or are enrolled in an approved course.

flying.monkeyz 13th Aug 2014 22:46

They'll let you take the exams. They just won't issue you with the licence until you're hired.

sgcloudchaser 2nd Sep 2014 09:05

anyone knows if there are any current batch doing CPL/IR in SFC ground in seletar? what batches are those?

thanks!

flying.monkeyz 2nd Sep 2014 13:12

Some belongs to Silkair.

fromdgrndup 2nd Sep 2014 15:14

Looking at SilkAir's posting for D.E.C. gives some hope that at least the pilot surplus that SIA said they had seems to be easing. Also their technical crew was down by around 150 from last year albeit 76 of those must have been from the expats who had early termination of their contracts.
But I guess with the MPL program, they won't hire new cadets till the pilot batch is complete so we're still going to have to wait till the end of FY 2015-16 for any news.

Maverick16 3rd Sep 2014 02:36

How come the DEC for Silkair is posted on the jobs bank but there is nothing posted on the Silkair careers website? In fact the website says there are no pilot positions available. What exactly does "Direct Entry" mean anyways? That you'll go straight into Silkair? Or do you have to possess some kinda qualifications?

fromdgrndup 3rd Sep 2014 06:38

My guess is that SilkAir feels it will not get enough DEC from Singapore and as of 1st August 2014, any company that wishes to apply for an EP has to put up an advertisement on the job bank for a minimum of 14 days.
DEC requirements might be at least a CPL or MPL and they would take you on as a cadet and give you the TR before putting you on as a SO.

wonderland 3rd Sep 2014 18:30

Reliable source says it's direct entry SO/FO. Means they are taking in people with CAAS CPL/IR. Namely the few STAA and OAA guys loitering around waiting for jobs.

Type rating will be done in house, shortage of A320 crews predicted due to senior crew transitions to B737.

wonderland 3rd Sep 2014 18:32

As for the SFC batch, in seletar now are all the Silk boys. The guys that just reached Jandakot are the " Flying Tigers".

Shazzle 11th Sep 2014 06:20

Hi guys,

I've spoken to a couple of SQ pilots and have been reading the threads and it seems like the situation at SQ is not too good due to a surplus of pilots. I figured this would be the best time to acquire my PPL, CPL and ATPL. However, there are so many different options available and I can't seem to make up my mind. I'm nearing the end of my national service and I've been weighing my options. I have had offers from 3 universities namely UNSW, Swinburne and Massey to study Bachelor of Aviation which would include flying training. Another alternative would be to attain the CAAS license through Oxford or STAA. Could anybody shed some light on the pros and cons of both routes?

Prusaesl 11th Sep 2014 08:49

Get a degree first will be the better and safer option so you have something to fall back on in the future.

wonderland 12th Sep 2014 03:12

Yea dont waste your time with a private route, even the airline cadets are getting screwed, go research 3k/3 course with OAA.

Being a pilot is a thing of the past. Go be a doctor or a lawyer.

Veins101 14th Sep 2014 13:08

Long time no see all, I'll be starting with STAA tomorrow for CPL. Also applied for silkair DEC. Seeing that they will want people who already have CPL I don't think they will give my application much of a glance.

@wonderland, Lawyer also got surplus soon haha!!!

Cheers.

Maverick16 14th Sep 2014 14:12

Veins101, just curious - seeing that you've decided to do your cpl locally and as a private candidate, what made you choose STAA over SFC?

wonderland 14th Sep 2014 18:14

Yea, why STAA? You want to go to Ballarat and sit around watching china southern, qatar, tiger cadets being rushed through flying phase and the private candidates getting 1 sortie every 2-3 weeks?

After that coming back to sg, having your CAAS CPL dragged because they are not to keen issuing you a CPL without an employer, and your only chance of finding work is probably with one of the simulator outfits.

Heed my advice, don't go the private route.

Veins101 15th Sep 2014 00:21

@maverick16, price point that's it, I got through the school interview for SFC to the tiger but was not selected. Could have joined as a private candidate but it's too expensive.

@wonderland, I'll take note of what you have said. Contract hours are contract hours you won't get less. I don't think they want you to stay there too long. If there is a congestion problem I believe STAA will resolve it soon.

flying.monkeyz 15th Sep 2014 07:39

Veins - so how's Day 1? And how are the instructors?
