You can either apply drift to the true track to get true heading and then find the compass heading OR you can find the 'compass track' and then apply drift correction to get the compass heading. Both ways work fine.
I think the answer is still 358. The value of variation is 11W, so from True Hdg of 342, we get magnetic hdg 353deg, then the deviation is -5 = 5W, which means compass heading is 358deg.
Negative value of variation/dev is west, positive value is east.

@flyhigh27
the method u have applied will give u the same result as vivekh
its like saying A+B-C or A-C+B
i believe there is and error in the calculation made
342(T) is what u have gotten applying drift rightly so,
then u apply variation of 11W u get 353(M)
then u apply deviation of -5 (which is also west) u get 358(C)
cheers..... again correct me if im wrong...

Semi circular rule:
Magnetic track 000 to 179 - Odd FLs 190,210,230, etc
Magnetic track 180 to 359 - Even FLs 200,220,240,etc.
Thing to remember is that it applies to magnetic track and not magnetic heading. So for a heading of 005deg with 15 degrees port drift, you will fly an even flight level, since your mag track is 350deg.

@ vivekh
thanks..

and also please tell about RVSM.
thanks a lot, u r a great help!!!!

For Non RVSM airspaces:
From transition level to FL290 - every 1000ft is a FL. Eg. 260,270,280...
From FL290 upwards - every 2000ft is a FL. Eg. FL 310, FL330, FL350...

People please correct me if I am wrong here;
SEMI CIRCULAR RULE:
000-179: ODD THOUSANDS UPTO FL290,
THERAFTER UPTO FL410: 330,370,410
180-359: EVEN THOUSANDS UPTO FL280
THEREAFTER ODD THOUSANDS 310,350,390
RVSM:
REDUCED SEPARTION FROM 2000' TO 1000' ABOVE FL290
000-179: ODD THOUSANDS
180-359: EVEN THOUSANDS

@vivekh and @flyhigh 27
hi..i think correct answer for your forth ques will be 287 dme and 1hr 54 min. even i am unsure about it ..but i guess we'll go bout it as..required speed is 150 kts(given),and required eta is 0955(actual eta-0940 adding 15mins to it)
so dist to cover for this is 1hr 55 min/150 kts...i.e 287 nm.with this u'll get d dist

Questions 28/July
Paper mostly had Human Performance questions,lots of nav numericals(CDMVT,drift,Departure),Turning errors in Magnetic Compass,About 5 questions on CG,Find slant rage DME 2 numericals,Met-steam fog,lapse rate(basic questions),Regs basics about 7 questions-Visibilty,SSR codes,Ground Air Light signals.
Some of the Human Perf Questions I can recollect
Dry air is a mixture of gases. Their volume percentage is about:[/B]
21% oxygen,78% nitrogen, 1% other gases.
Oxygen, combined with haemoglobin in blood is transported by:
red blood cells
The heart muscle is supplied with blood from
the coronary arteries.
Inhaling carbon monoxide can be extremely dangerous during flying. Which of the following statement(s) is/are correct?
Carbon monoxide is odourless and cannot be smelled.
The proprioceptive senses (Seat of-the-Pants-Sense):
give wrong information, when outside visual reference is lost
The purpose of the semicircular canals
Sense angular acceleration
With vertigo the instrument-panel seems to tumble . This is due to
the Coriolis effect in the semicircular canals
Although we have a field of vision of more than 180° it is important during flight to use the scan ning technique, because:
only in the foveal area resolution is good enough to see an object clearly
When a pilot is starring at an isolated stationary light for several seconds in the dark he might get the illusion that:
the light is moving
The relationship between arousal and flying performance is
approximately the form of an inverted U
