Thanks everyone. Very best to you all.

To answer Qns: I applied for the Cadet Pilot Program through Cathay website in 2009, had stage 1 interview 2009, and stage 2/3 in Hong Kong in 2010.

Hey Happyguy,

congrats on going to flight grading. Any idea when the short course might start? I'm curious as to why they will send you in September, it seems kinda far away. Well, I'm waiting for the call myself, so hopefully we'll meet up then.

Anyone from Toronto going to short course flight grading as well?

Cheers,
NB

"Thank you for your interest in the pre-qualified course. Unfortunately we do not have any further update or details regarding the status of the pre-qualified course for CPL/ATPL holders so far.

my 2 cents...

if you plan to come here with no housing do SERIOUS homework.

If you are 30+ with any number of kids forget it, housing will kill your income.

This is not scare mongering this is fact!! Do not come here with no housing, you wont be able to afford it.

Dont take my word ask around how much housing costs.

Totally agree! To rent a small flat in tung chung will cost your about 10k per mo. To send your kids to school in HK will cost you about 2-3k per mo. Living expenses for 4 ppl in hk will cost you about 20-25k per mo. S/O starting salary is about 33k per mo. Doesn't really add up right! It may be okay for a single guy to come to HK without the housing, but married guy with kids. No way. And I've heard that the old Direct entry S/O scheme will not happen anymore.

Just wondering if anyone has an interview in the near future for the accelerated/short couse program and what your experience is?

I have an interview in January and currently fly for a regional carrier. I have wanted to fly for Cathay for a number of years now and applied for the DESO a few years back. Even with the no housing allowance it would be equivalent to what I would be making now at the regional level. Just wondering if anyone is in the same situation and considering this as well?

Cheers

But the cost of living in Hong Kong will be far more expensive than your home country. Don't underestimate this.

Do some research on living costs, food, electricity, etc.

404 Titan has posted some very accurate "cost of living" lists. Do yourself a favor & look it up using the search function.

q400driver, not trying to make you change your mind but food for thought: does/will it bother you that your compensation will be based on everything else except flight experience and professional skills you have accumulated working for an airline?

Also won't it bother you that the SO standing next to you in dispatch that joined in 08 is on over 3 times what you make with similar experience on joining?

Probably not guys. Some of the experienced folks that want to come through this program blow my mind. Your QOL here on SO pay with no housing will be TERRIBLE compared to being back home. Please listen to these guys, they aren't exaggerating.
