lol

hahaha!! Thats a good one!! well most airlines have the take it or leave it attitude now. Too bad it has come down to this. But guys, never forget where you came from. I wouldn't mind doing DEFO too. I would not want to Baby sit the autopilot for 8 years. I think I'll have more fun at home on flight sim. So why are people with so much experience doing SO anyways? That is so crazy. I guess the CX flight attendants are just too hot. I heard someone at silk air went to a SO interview with 4000 hours and was about to upgrade. WOW@@@@. Thanks for screwing up the market. I'm sure he has his reasons. Good luck to everyone trying for a job at CX. It used to be my dream to work there. But it seems more like a nightmare now. Don't get me wrong. I still don't mind to flying for free.

Which on would you go for?

1. A gig flying Cessna 152 for 100K a year

or

2. Flying a CRJ in the US for 40K a year?

We all know what the majority would pick!! That's why aviation is what it is today

I guess that question is only directed at wannabees.

Unfortunately it takes some time before you realise it's about the coin.

and unfortunately it takes even longer to realize the coin got you in but it won't get you out. money doesn't buy you days off with family, better rostering/patterns (read less fatigue), nor does it buy you self-fulfillment (i know, what a concept!). people, flying is just a job, whether it's cessnas, rj's or 74's. find your life outside work. if you can't, you are in the wrong business.

Hi!

Just talked to a guy who said Cathay is THE best airline job in the world.

Read here that Cathay is the worst: Also have read that HKA, HKE, Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, Delta, Continental, Atlas, UAL, USAir, Alaska, COPA, Mauritias, Madagascar, USA Jet, Korean, Japan 767 contract, etc., etc. are THE worst airline in the world. Obviously, they can't ALL be THE worst, so to figure out how they are relative to each other is a tough job, with so many pilots claiming that theirs is THE worst!

Cathay is currently hiring FAs, and it sounds like DEFOs soon. There is a pool of DEFOs.

Hi!

Eiffle2: ALL of the guys I know would take the C-172 $100K job.

For everyone else: Your chances of DEFO just went up. A LOT....

There is a pool of DEFOs.

That "Pool" has been there since 2008 and has not been "fished". It has however decreased significantly in size. Most of the people I have talked to have been hired by other companies like ANA/Emirates or even moved on to non-flying jobs, and have no intention of taking the offer if CX calls.
Left are the hopeful fools like myself who are still dreaming of working for CX

For everyone else: Your chances of DEFO just went up. A LOT....
What makes you say that?

Hi!

Someone posted a job advert for Cathay for DEFOs, and a link to the Cathay site. Cathay is showing DEFO position and you can apply/update your application.

I WOULD like to get confirmation from someone working for Cathay. In the US, the airlines will not show an open position, or allow new applications or updates unless they are in hiring mode. HOWEVER, it IS possible that the advert for DEFOs was old (there is NO date on it) AND that the Cathay website ALWAYS shows DEFOS and allows new applications/updates all the time, regardless if they are hiring or not.

On their website, FO is listed under "Current Job Openings".

Mr. Cliff,

On several independent websites, you have been cheerleading the 'recent development in DEFO hiring status'. I can assure you that they have been recruiting direct entry crew since dirt was rock and rock was dirt.

Consider this your confirmation that Cathay are not in direct-entry hiring mode and not ramping up. Some men have applied to that same window three+ years ago, interviewed, conditionally offered employment and never inducted.

Move on, there's nothing to see here.. again.

Hi!

Thanx for that confirmation that they are not hiring now, and accepting apps and advertising for positions does not mean that they are. They do it differently than most other airlines.

PS-I have had my app in at Cathay for about 2-3 years.

T-Mass,

They haven't left that ad up by mistake. They are just keeping their options open. If they again have a period with rapid expansion, Cadets only will not be a viable solution.

I wouldn't bet on any massive expansions in the next few years. Also guys, seriously think about the working environment you would be coming to. Not telling you to suck eggs, but do some reading here before you go and sign up!

I think there are gripe guts in all the companies. As for CX I don't think it is much worse than any other place these days.

If you do nothing else visit these sites :

Hong Kong's pollution problem | Greenpeace China

Health Impacts | Clean Air Network

Air Pollution Hong Kong - Help us Clear The Air

or just stick these 3 words in your search engine : pollution hong kong.
Then find out how much a pair of lungs are and multiply it by the number of family members you will have with you in HK, take this figure from the salary and see if it is worth it.

Pilots, myself included, will always whinge about something to do with their company. Conditions, time to command, staff travel etc etc, these are mostly " perceived " by the individual, that is, what one pilot thinks is unreasonable another will think is fine.
The pollution is real, its there, you can see it, for christs sake you can taste and smell it ( sometimes ) 100s of people die and 1000s get sick from it each year.
This is not perceived.

PS if the 100K/year Cessna job was here and the 40K CRJ job back home, it's a no brainer.

Unfortunately pollution in HK is very real. You need go no further than sore eyes and throat to find out. One day earlier this year the index reached 500 and all the measuring machines stopped working (read "maxed out") but some non-governmental sources put it at 730.

I guess that is the reason why the thread is called:

"What are my chances in Cathay for a Direct Entry FO?"

Whoever started it has no intention of going to HK.

Then it should have been titled "what are my chances of being a career FO in CX".
