Cost of commuting to HKG from Oz

G'day,

Just wondering what the costs involved with commuting are?

Given a HKG basing, out of AUS for tax purposes and taking the 24k base rate housing allowance, staying at a crash pad as required?

Thanks!

The "zone" ticket is about HKD1600 economy (the least you require for a J/S) to approximately double that for a business class ticket.

Hotels are from HKD500 to HKD800/night.

Crashpad costs are from HKD2K/month for a 4-holer in Tung Chung and up.

Semantics, though. No hiring is the general sentiment for '09.

Commuting to HK for Tax purposes

PLE always. If you are going to accept a HK basing, but in reality commute, and live in Oz for tax purposes you would be cheating on the rest of the tax payers of Oz. If you are not prepared to make your contribution in the country you call home we would be better off without you.

No actually I will wade in..

I'm very much at ease with contribution (certainly beyond mere tax dollars) and sacrifice that my family and I have made in the service of this country. Nuff said.

If I choose to live a life legally IAW with ATO guidance that's my business.

Residency - overview

Happy with the feedback gents, I've got what I need, done with the thread, thanks.

PLE..

Legally IAW ATO guidance.

If you act IAW ATO guidance, fine. But please don't give me the "sacrifice that my family and I have made in the service of this country" line. I happen to know a bit about it after 23 years with Ronnie.

You're just spoiling for an argument/spar aren't you?

Spoiling for an Argument/Spar

PLE Always. I am not spoiling for an argument or a spar. Your initial post indicated you would contemplate a basing in HK for tax purposes. One can be forgiven for taking that to mean that you would be advising the ATO that you are employed off shore on a basing. CX would also believe that to be the case if you accept the rental allowance applicable. You asked about the cost of commuting, which indicates you will really be residing in Australia. Did the ATO also tell you that every dollar earned in Australia by a non-resident attracts tax, no tax free threshold. (At least that is how it used to be)

As I said, if you are contemplating acting IAW guidance from the ATO, great. Just be sure you are up front about any income derived within Oz, because if you are not you leave yourself open to legal action AND you would be cheating on the tax payers of OZ. Good luck which ever way you jump, hope it is a smooth landing.

Besides the tax dodging part, you will run yourself ragged. SYD-HKG is not exactly a short hop. As tuck had already mentioned: 15yrs life expectancy.

Syd-hkg

GlueBall is spot on. I tried it for 12 months and decided life was too short to keep doing it, especially after getting into HKG off a ULH flight.

Don't forget to factor in a few full fares per year, unless you are fortunate enough to not have to travel during Xmas, New Year, CNY, and School holidays, of course I am sure crewing will make sure you don't have to travel during these times
It will cost somewhere between 10-20,000HKD HKG-SYD-HKG during the above times.
I believe ID50 satisfies the requirements for turning up for duty ? around 7000HKD ?
Enjoy
