PLE Always. I am not spoiling for an argument or a spar. Your initial post indicated you would contemplate a basing in HK for tax purposes. One can be forgiven for taking that to mean that you would be advising the ATO that you are employed off shore on a basing. CX would also believe that to be the case if you accept the rental allowance applicable. You asked about the cost of commuting, which indicates you will really be residing in Australia. Did the ATO also tell you that every dollar earned in Australia by a non-resident attracts tax, no tax free threshold. (At least that is how it used to be)
As I said, if you are contemplating acting IAW guidance from the ATO, great. Just be sure you are up front about any income derived within Oz, because if you are not you leave yourself open to legal action AND you would be cheating on the tax payers of OZ.
