Domicile Question?

Question for you Cathay Folks. I'm currently living in Seattle and plan on staying there. In regards to basing, is one allowed to say be based in Vancouver B.C. but yet live in Seattle? Thanks for your time.........

You can live wherever you want as long as you make it to work on time.

Sorry, not the whole story

My apologies, I had better make that clearer.

You can live wherever you like as long as you make it to work on time.

BUT

CX will not organise any work visa or residency rights. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are 'legal' to work there. Perhaps it might be safer to ask any specific questions to the immigration department in the country that you are going to be based in. This is especially true if you are not going to be living there, simply commuting to then immediately fly out. I'll bet Revenue Canada has an interest tho'!

Thanks again Kane,

I have been thinking about Cathay long and hard now since I got a regional job and the only thing that really turns me off is the whole commuting thing and not being able to jump seat on a dime....... Thanks

Hi Skell
Here's my understanding of your situation:
Cathay has stated that you have to be legal to live where you live - sounds obvious and redundant, but think about it - where you RESIDE is the legal issue, not where you operate the aircraft from. I believe there are many Canadians commuting to operate out of JFK New York.
It would be worth checking, but I am pretty sure you could be Vancouver based, and live in the US (legal to live, where you live).
Something else to consider - Currently Vancouver is not an option for a new hire, but I hear that all N American bases are available to current CX pilots (ie. if you've been flying at CX for some undefined period, you could bid for Vancouver, and could be assigned it - I think that it is seniority based).
New hires are going to JFK, LAX or ANK.
Another thing to explore is the preferred port concept, which CX recently stated they will be trying to accommodate as much as possible. In this case, you would ask to be assigned to LAX or ANK (your choice), with Vancouver as your preferred port. CX will then attempt to roster trips from VAN, you may only have to commute once a month (or 4 times - no guarantees).

Hey Gull thanks for the insight........

Just trying to weight all of my options for my next job. Where ever it is I would like to retire there. I don't mind commuting because it's what I told myself I would be doing for the rest of my career, but if I have pay full fares all of the time, well you know??? If I read previous post correctly working for Cathay your able to get ID 90's and the such?
Thanks again Skell..........................
