CX attitude towards Lasik
Hi everyone, I'm a newbie and would like to apply for the CPP.
CX formal stand on this Lasik is:
"refractive eye surgery eg. LASIK, is not recommended by Cathay Pacific Airways as a mean of correcting vision for purposes of holding a pilot's licence, because as with all medical procedures, there are potential postoperative complications which may affect the vision standard and therefore make the applicant medically unfit."
While from the previous post in this fourm, some said that CX will even nix you if you have done the refractive eye surgery.
The fact is that I have already done the Lasik surgery in 2003 so as to pass the eyes requirement. At that time, shortsight was not allowed. 20/20 should be a true 20/20. (not corrective 20/20). After I done the surgery they changed their poicy.
I have spent tremendous effort, time, money to prepare for the interview, and I will devote all of my life time trying my best to join CX until my age is unfit for it. So I simply cannot affort the situation that after 10 years effort, I failed the tenth times interviews (as I will try every year if failed) and still don't realise that I simply have no chance for it.
The formal stand of CX on this issue is tricky. It says "is not recommended" but not "will not be considered"
So could any person kindly tell me the truth before I spend my tremendous effort on it. It's not a joke, my life including, the decision for marriage, study, job, entertainment will be severely distorted for nothing, if ......
Thank you very much.

cecshab,
I had LASIK surgery done in June 2003, went to CX in Feb the following year and 2 weeks later I had an interview. A few weeks later I had a second, and I'm still here.
The Laser surgery didn't seem to pose any problem at all, even though I had done it less than 12 months previously. All that had to be done was some extra medical forms filled out by my opthalmologist in OZ. Each year I do the standard CX medical, and also an additional test from an opthalmoligist here in HK.
At no time throughout the interview was the Laser surgery question asked or considered a problem.
Go for it !

cecshab,
Why don't you just call the Flight Crew Recruitment, or even the medical people at Cathay, and ask them about it straight up? Seems to me, they are the only people in position to shed some real light on the subject. If nothing else, you might find out where you stand.
Let us know what you have found out. Doubts be gone!
Spektor.

CP,
Be that as it may (what you heard), but the proof is in the pudding. I have had the surgery done, and had no trouble with the HK CAD or with CX and the operation had only been done just over 12 months when my licence was converted.
I do agree though with the other post. Call them and talk to them, I did that also prior to the interviews.

LASIK is completely ok for the CPP(cx) = acceptable, jz not recommended and "prefer" 1 yr cooling period for candidates who completed LASIK, 10mons the earliest for application submission. the only matter is whether or not you may able to obtain a 1st class med cert from HKCAD, and is depend on the condition of each individual (in simple form - stable or not).
you may take this as an official ans as of this writing moment.

Thank you Mizzy and WaldoPepper,
Mizzy, thanks for your more affirmative statement here. U r really too kind. That's why everyone in HKFA loves u so much and so does I. Really thanks.
And Waldo, u are nice too, your solid fact break all the rumours, thank you!!
Well, I won't ask them directly again, as if they are so kind to tell me the truth, I will know it immedately in the 1 stage interview, which is coming very soon, and I won't waste my effort after they tell me. The point is, if they delibrately hide the truth, there is no point to ask them again and again.
Actually, I tend to believe them won't do it in that way.
