PPL for CX Cadet Scheme

Hi all,

I am going to Auckland for a PPL course in preparation for the CX Cadet Scheme. Could anyone advise me on this?

1. Is Ardmore Flying School in Auckland good? (any kiwis can help?)
2. Is a PPL helpful for standing out from the crowd? Or does every applicant have one already? But many of the winners I know do not have.
3. I failed the flight grading in March 2004. Does CX consider re-applicants or do they just throw my application away? (I know the competition is keen but I still get some hope in it after talking to some cadets)

I am now 23 and will be 24 in April. Is it too late to consider getting all those CPL, ATPL , Instructor Rating and hour building? As I may only save enough money at 28 or 29, after all the years spent on these (someone in the forum spent 8 years), I will be thirty something who deserves no considersations from both CX and gals.

So, should I keep dreaming???????

Cheers,

John

hi johnjohnpoon,

alright no worries, i am going to answer your question by own ideas.
1. Chief FLying instructor, Warren S. If you get him to train you would be good. That's in Ardmore.Rumours says his not straight.
Beside this, Armore is a pretty good flying school up to good standard. Beside ardmore, there are many other school that are speciallized in training Airlines pilot, even cheaper and meets ICAO standards.

2. you are right, nowadays, every cadet up to second stage interview has got a PPL or more than this.

3.I failed the flight grading in March 2004??? do you mean 2003. The thing is CX won't consider those cadet who failed flight grading within two years.

4. the trend in CX, insofar is early thirties.

Beside, you better to consider your financial situation before you persue flight training, there is no turning back. Take it serious before you go.

Hi JP.

What is the problem with you. March 2004 grading haven't even started. What are you asking for a question. Did you meant by you were not selected for March 2004 because failed the previous grading.

The question is, if you fail, what are you going to do? What kinda answer would you like to expect from. Are you going to persue for a Frozen ATPL. Or are you reapplying for the Cadet pilot.

Hi, all
I just post another message here. I had a same plan with John. I am going to apply for flying training in GFS (General Flying Services) in GFS.
I would like to ask, anybody can share his expereience training there? and compare with Ardmore Flying School , which one is better?
I appreciate your information.

flydreamer,

Flying in GFS is very expensive. you got to consider really serious before you go. it costs you about HKD 120000 up to PPL included living costs.

GFS

Wait a minute! Can one pay for training at GFS? If so up to what license? Their fixed wing fleet consists of only tubro props I thought.

And doesn't GFS stand for Government Flying Service..?

Something doens't sound right.

Hi hijack,

Yeah, right. A typo. It's March 2003, not March 2004. Thanks for pointing it out.

You said Ardmore is good and I am happy with your comment. But I have some comments from others that they don't treat students good. I hope this is not true.

Well, as a matter of fact, to be successful in the cadet scheme, you don't need a PPL. Four other guys went to Adeladie with me have no license but still got in. In fact, it depends on the applicants in that particular slot. E.g. one class has more than half PPL and several CPL and even a fighter pilot!!

I will do the PPL and reapply the cadet scheme even though the chance is small. I am still thinking of getting a fozen ATPL later but it needs a big sum of money, so I still haven't made up my mind.

Is the "graders failed in last two years have no chance" comment true????? Don't scare me...

Btw, what else flying schools will you recommend?

JP

hi Justin_Credible,

You got the wrong idea, he means the flying school in OZ, not Hong Kong General Flying Service of HKSAR Govt.

As I know, HKGFS will not recruit cadets in the near future.

hi jontyrhodes,

I think you can pass. Just do what you can do. I failed just because I don't have talents.

And, the fact is, you can't prepare for the grading. One comment is, get along well with the cadets there but don't ask their comments on the grading, just do what the instructors tell you to do. Remeber the map of Parafield real good. And take some pills if you are prone to airsickness (but this is not recommended, only take pills if you really have to)

Hope this help

JP

There are piles after piles of application forms at the office at the moment so expect a longer wait. They'll get to you eventually!

According to the XYZ book they say they will let you know as quick as 2 weeks to as long as 6 months. Guess you can give them a call and see what is your application status.

I am sorry that I don't know much about overseas applications. Local applicants will be called in two months after sending their forms. it seems that your first interview will be in Sydney and may be fixed on some days in a year. (Local interviews continue throughout the year) So, you may need to wait for a long time if you sent your form much earlier than the arranged interview date. Anyway, I ain't quite sure about it, you better give them a call.

Kinex,
Do you hold a permanent Hong Kong ID card, if not you are wasting your time and it is no wonder you haven't received a response, you would not be eligible for the programme. As for interviews in SYD, no way for cadet interviews, only direct entry pilots, all interviews for the Cadet scheme take place in CX City, Hong Kong. JohnJohn, this so called fighter pilot on the cadet course in Adelaide, you'd better clarify this. Was this person trained on fighter jets or did he/she simply backseat a couple of rides in fast jets because of his/her military background. I think you should get your facts straight before launching off on something you're not so sure about.

Hydrolix,
He's a real fighter pilot from UK. I met him in Adelaide. Anyway, he isn't your competitor, so if you don't believe it, just forget it.
JP

Or you can ask anyone from CP17. I am sure they can tell you the truth

The pilot in question does have a couple of sorties in a Harrier, and also flew the Hawk during training. Whether that qualifies him as a fighter pilot is subject to opinion, as he was more of a heli pilot by trade, with only about 200 odd hours under his belt.

And in terms of heli pilots, there are a few cadets who have that distinction.

Thanks Bagel,

He was never actually trained as a fighter pilot and never actually recieved his wings. He was trained as a chopper pilot but resigned before flying the heavies. Tut Tut JohnJohn.
