Not necessarily - a 747 can happily cruise at 37k Mach .84 on 3 engines providing it's not too heavy (been there, done that during 747-8 flight test). I assume an A380 would be similarly capable....

It depends. As wiedehopf notes, some operators depend on lease engines for day-to-day operations, others only use them to fill in when something unexpected happens.
An example of the latter might...

Designers (and regulators) are very leery of systems that can automatically and unilaterally shut down an engine in-flight. That's because, no matter how much testing you do, you can never...

If you mean installing a Rolls engine, it may not even be practical - on most aircraft the interfaces are totally different (I don't have any knowledge of the A380 - there was an attempt at 'plug and...

The big GE engines have a readily removable fan module that can be removed or installed in less than a shift, no special tooling required. Sure, they can go into the AN-124 intact, but it's not that...

It all depends on what they need to do for the inspection. IF (and that is a big if) it can be done with a boroscope, it'll only take a few hours - readily done on a normal overnight. If, as...

That's common design practice for both Pratt and GE. GE refers to the compressor stages on the LP shaft as the "booster" or "booster stages", Pratt simply calls that the LP Compressor.
The only big...

For some reason Rolls hasn't used the 'clashing blades' to slow the turbine in the event of a shaft separation. I always figured it had something to do with the 3 spool architecture on the RB211 and...
