At the end of the day, this flight was safely on ground with no occupants on the ground killed or wounded. We assume the same would be the case had they diverted to Stansted, but we can't say that...

I have always been trained to position a burning...

I have always been trained to position a burning aircraft with the fire on the downwind side, not into the wind. I would consider into the wind as a fairly good second, if time is really critical....

The guys were probably busy dealing with the problems, doing check lists, communicating with ATC, company, pax, crew, etc, so the extra track miles (time) could have been needed for all of this....
