A clue: it was opened in 1936 and closed in 1991. Among other uses, it served as a airforce base.

Thanks Tu.114, the name change of the city got me in the right direction, because that had to be Russia. Most likely Leningrad (St Petersburg). Through Tupolev, I arrived at Chetverikov's MBR-3....

Thanks S'land, the "French" gave it away. Aviasud made some pretty nice aircraft, all with a destinctive design. I flew the Albatros a couple of times, very nice plane, easy to fly.
