from my experience in Germany, it`s all about the weight. If the A/C is less than 10t it`s mostly done in a Friday afternoon party, like a previous poster said already. The paperwork...

It doesn`t do anything else than providing the FCS with information like Altitude and VS.
The Altitude encoders were usually installed in the P1 and P2 Altimeters and exactly therefore the switch...
