JAA Class 1 Expiry / Renewal

Hello,

If I allow my JAA Class 1 to expire by 6 months(as I am out the country), am I able to simply renew it as I usually do every year with my AME doing the same examination as per usual?

If I renew the IR before it expires, I can do this in the SIM

BUT

If I allow it to expire, I then need to revalidate it in the actual aircraft?
