Dash 8 400,how fast?

Following a 400 last week ATC asked his speed,285 kts says he so we are told to reduce to 260 kts.

2 mins later ATC give us a 90 Deg turn and tell us to reduce to 220 Kts as we were getting too close.

On the staff bus later overheard a conversation that the managment of the Dash 8 company had told them that they had to fly no faster than 250 kts to save fuel.

Not having a go at anyone just interested in what went wrong

The Dash 8 Q400 is limited to 245 kts IAS below FL080 (at least for the company I work for) due to bird strike hazard. Can go up to 285 kts between FL100 and FL180 (ish), then it starts to run out of puff!

Max cruise speed 356 kts at FL200, but Vmo as stated above. For a turboprop, its a bit of an animal.

Catch you around very soon.

the Q400 can do 285kts in the descent, but has to slow down below FL80 due to the windscreen limiting speed which affects Vmo.

I do believe that the carrier that you are talking about have been told to maintain 250kts as some maths guru has decided that it will save XXX £'s over the next 12 months.

The one thing that the Q400 doesn't do is 'run out of puff!'. It's a quick machine for a turoprop, and I used to love flying it....
