Crmi

Hi,

I am currently taking my ATPL (A) studies with a view to future employment. As a military pilot, I attended the standard CRM training, but then opted to develop it further.

I am now thinking as developing it to CRMI status.

The questions I would like to ask are these:

What are the current company CRM set ups? Is there a dedicated CRM section or does a front line pilot with the qualification do the refreshers?

Would this investment be worthwhile in that the extra qualification and flexibility of employment will assist my chances of future employment?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Mosspigs

Whilst I applaud your motives I would suggest you wait a while before going for your CRMI. I have been doing it for 3 years now and my background was probably similar to yours. You may well have some relevant experience but I think it helps greatly if you've been in the industry a while before teaching CRM. You need to be able to relate to the topics with first hand experience of life on the line otherwise you will be behind the drag curve during the many discussions that ensue. You need to know what it's like for the cabin crew eg dealing with disruptive passengers and often they will ask you questions on procedures and it's not all stuff you can read in a book. You need credibility or some of the old bold brigade will stare at the floor or the ceiling. Some sessions are great, others you will be peddling hard into wind and if the girls start looking at their nails you know you're losing the battle. It's a great challenge though and if you manage to win round a group - very satisfying.

I don't think going for CRMI at your stage will necessarily increase your chances of getting a flying job, although it's a good idea to mention at interview that you'd be interested in going for it in the future, should you be successful etc. Beware though, you could shoot yourself in the foot cos the airline may already have a waiting list of current pilots wanting to be CRMIs so you don't want to come over as arrogant.

Most airlines have their own group of CRMIs who are current pilots and cabin crew who do CRM as an extra. Smaller operators may contract out for CRM but it's expensive.

My advice: get your feet under the table in a company first, then after you've established yourself as a competent operator and you've got some street cred with the other pilots and the cabin crew, then ask to be considered.

Also, being ex mil, you may need to win your wings with your colleagues some of whom will not give a rats **** about what you did in your previous life. Again, it's a question of credibility and although I don't doubt you have had great training and experience, you need to win the respect of guys/girls some of whom have grafted long and hard, possibly flying night freight in a prop single pilot in ****e weather, before they got a job in a shiny jet.

I'm sure I don't need to tell you this, and if I'm teaching you to draw sustenance from a spheroidal body then I apologise, but a little humility goes a long way in this industry.

Hope that helps, and good luck with getting your first job.
