Trigana Air Service flight TGN267 is reported missing on a domestic flight between Jayapura-Sentani Airport (DJJ) and Oksibil Airport (OKL) in Indonesia. On board are 49 passengers and 5 crew members.
The ATR-42 departed Jayapura at 14:21 LT (05:21 UTC) and was expected to arrive at Oksibil at 15:16 LT (06:16 UTC). Contact was lost at 14:21 LT (05:21 UTC).
Darkness will hit in around 30 minutes. Not a good area to get lost in, for those that don't know the area, its very remote, basically no assistance anywhere between airports, nothing but high elevation mountainous regions.

framer 16th Aug 2015 09:47

Is that why it reports that it took off at the same time that contact was lost? Ie there is no radar so there never was 'contact'.?

Not a good area to get lost in
That is to put it mildly. Airfield elevation 4205 Ft, 9000+ jungle covered peaks within 10 miles from threshold. There is rock in every cloud there...

DaveReidUK 16th Aug 2015 09:56

ASN are reporting contact lost at 05:55 UTC, ie approximately halfway into the flight. Doesn't look good.

Indonesian airplane with 54 on board missing in Papua region - officials ? RT News

This will be their 11th hull loss.
Think about that as a great indicator of Indonesia's overall attitude to flight safety. You'd think they'd have been stopped from operating at some point....but no...cash is king. This is why I'll never give them a cent of my tourism cash. Shysters.

I said it after MH370 and others

A 100 dollar GPS tracker attached to airplanes, with about 20-30 dollars in subscription fees each year, and SAR responders are already on their way to wherever this plane is....

We would have saved HOW many millions in the (to date) fruitless search for MH370.

We would have saved HOW much money and time in locating Air Asia 8501.

It's time.

Reports indicate that villagers near Oksibil saw the aircraft crashed and contacted the authorities. So they have a good idea where the plane is.

But like UAV689 mentioned, the terrain there is very rugged. With poor weather and the fact that the SAR there can't operate at night, unfortunately it's a very bad situation for any possible survivors.

Flight is only about 50mins but it crosses a very remote jungle area

slightly off topic, but I wasn't surprised by the number of Indonesion airlines which are on the euro ban list, including Trigana.

The wreckage of an Indonesian plane carrying 54 people has been found in the remote western Papua region, officials say.
The Trigana Air flight left the regional capital Jayapura for Oksibil in the south at 14:21 local time (05:21GMT), but lost contact with ground control.
Indonesia's transport minister said the aircraft had been found in the Bintang highlands region of Oksibil.
It is not yet known if anyone survived.

SAR statement via social media following news that the plane has been found:

(loose translation)

1. At this time the Joint SAR team has not arrived at the location where local residents reported seeing the Trigana aircraft crash

2. Until the Joint SAR team arrives at the crash location and can directly verify the situation, we cannot confirm any news being reported elsewhere

3. We are awaiting direct reports from the team which was dispatched this afternoon to the presumed point where the Trigana flight lost contact

4. To ensure accuracy of the news being disseminated, it is best to wait for direct reports from the Joint SAR team which is making their way to the crash site

5. The characteristics of the terrain in Papua (Oksibil) makes it difficult to quickly reach the presumed crash location as reported by local residents

6. At this point BASARNAS (National SAR) has not received the Trigana flight crash site coordinates

7. We urge all parties to wait for the Joint SAR team findings from the field to ensure the information being disseminated is more precise and accurate

3 out of 4 previous trigana accidents with fatalities were cfit in heavy rain or clouds, twotter against cumulogranite.

lilflyboy262...2 16th Aug 2015 22:23

Those boys and girls go in and out of there daily, 3 to 4 times a day.
It is an unbelievably dodgy airfield... but you follow the "rules" of going in there and all should be ok.
The weather is always "bad" there with big build ups and IMC being normal. But you just don't descend until you are over certain points.
They should know better than that...
