Thumbs down Manchester

I am amazed at the state of manchester airport.. .A few years ago they had a logo 'the world's best airport' - what happened to that ?? . .I wonder when was the last time Mr Teale and his oppo's walked around and actually looked at what they are running ?. .Why is it that the 'moving' walkways, don't move ?? passengers, forced to walk along bravo pier, down a set of stairs, across the pier, up another set of stairs, along bravo pier up another set of stairs (escalator there but dosn't work), - you get my drift !! passengers notice these things, why don't you ?. .Perhaps if a 'manager' of the 'worlds best airport' walked around the teminals and asked question's ? -here's a clue . .1)Why is that travalator not working ? "fix it". .There is no excuse for slack management.. .I am not employed by the airport, but use it alot, and i am amazed at the sums of money talked about in the media for managers pay deals.

They don't notice these things because they don't generate immediate cashflow.... .. ....Now, clamping staff cars in the staff carpark.. that's instant easy bucks in the MAPLC pockets!

I totally agree with the state of MAN, especially now as the decline in LGW it gives MAN a perfect opportunity to take over as UK's number 2 airport.

Have to say, after having worked there for a year and a half, I don't have a lot of positive things to say about the airport. It reminds me of something out of east europe, years ago...

Nice thread. Yep, MAN is becoming a joke. I actually wrote in about that walk from the B pier and got send a nice reply here in Switzerland about it being a temporary arrangement to comply with post-Sep 11th requirements to separate arriving and departing passengers.. .. .But the problem in MAN now is you've got management in there lining their pockets and trying to run the place according to Bob Ayling theories ie. latest trendy book they've picked up at WH Smiths.. .. .Rant over.

I'm surprised to hear that the management are running MAN to any theory, (other than the Ghengiz Khan "pillage, burn and bu**er off into the sunset" theory, that is).. .. .Now there are roadworks on every major approach road to the place, while disgruntled security officers picket the place in protest against being turned into "McEmployees".. .. .And you should see the state of the multi-storey car-park. If you can afford to park on it, that is!. .. .Gil Thomson, where are you now?

Question

Interesting that you mentioned the roadworks, I,flew out of there the other day, I was met at the end of the motorway by 'roadworks'(as far as I could make out they have put a cycle lane through the middle of the roundabout) which now means you have to go 1/2 a mile past your exit and come back on your self !!!. .Could someone at egcc management tell me who would travel down the motorway on a bicycle ??? or is it just political correctness gone mad ???. .maybe i'll use liverpool ?

Cool

If you find a travellator not working - call internal no 3776 or 0161 489 3776 & report it. It winds them up having to actually leave the office to fix!!!!. .. .To be fair, that number is just terminbal control who are supposed to sort such things out. I arrived recently on B and one of my elderly pax had to have paramedics called for her by the time she had been up and down god knows how many flights of stairs, c'mon MAN, 11/9 was a long time ago. You put the measures in quickly, so things CAN be done. Stop hiding behind 11/9 and sort out this mess.

I have been using MAN to and from the Far East for 6 years. Never once have both walkways in Terminal Two been operating and usually neither is operating. I began by advising them, thinking I was being helpful. Then I started complaining. Now I just view both management and employees with contempt. MAN is one of the most expensive airports in Europe, yet is one of the worst managed. Only CDG is worse.

As I understood it, MAN has had problems because of the need for segregation immediately after Sept 11th. This resulted in a number of temporary partitions being set up in the piers of T1, most notably in Pier C, and was also the reason for the Pier B problems described earlier in this thread, as DCS99 states. Perhaps something more permenant should be sorted out now.

Red face

I am MAN based and having seen the queue to get thru security on Sunday AM (about 300 yards in terminal 1) I've booked my hols to fly from another airport. The industrial action is the fault of the arrogant management who treat ALL MAN staff with total contempt. Vote with your feet!

I recently went to the information desk upstairs in T1 for some information (Stupid of me really).. .Needless to say for my comfort and convenience it wasn't manned but for my comfort and convenience there was a courtesy phone with a number to ring, which (you've probably guessed) for my comfort and convenience wasn't answered. It was mid afternoon.. .Does the expression 'all gloss no substance' come to mind?

Very wrong of me to generalise, I know, But I feel like a mini-rant - I live in Manchester (unfortunately) and I have grown to dislike it intensely on a general level. . .. .Bad attitude problem at all levels, infrastructure is terrible, local authorities even more so, crime rampant & culture has gone completely down the pan. If it wasnt for wife and kid I would have moved ages ago. Problems at MAN typify this. Needs a gigantic kick up the proverbial.

Unhappy

And another thing..... .Standby for another round of Staff Car Park Clamping.. .Our company's passes are due to run out at the end of the month and if the previous pattern is followed we won't get replacement passes until May.. .That leaves plenty of time for the clampers to have a field day.

"My problem with Manchester, you see, is that I have no image of it, none at all. Every other British city has something about it, some central motif, that fixes it in my mind: Newcastle has its bridge, Liverpool has the Liver Building and docks, Edinburgh its castle, Glasgow the great sprawl of Kelvingrove Park and the buildings of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, even Birmingham has the Bull Ring (and welcome to it). But Manchester to me is a perennial blank - an airport with a city attached". . .. .Taken from the book "Notes from a Small Island" by Bill Bryson.

Onan, mate!. .. .Give your personal beef with that city on the other side of the Irwell a rest, eh? It's becoming a bit of an obsession. Look at a map of the world. It's quite a long way from where you live - you're safe. (Are you SURE you're not a scouser?) . .. .Just feel sorry for the poor b****rs that have to live there - I only have to use the bloody airport a few times a year and that's bad enough. . .. .I'd still rather fly from there than from Dead Beatle International, though. Sorry, but that's my honest opinion. And Heathrow's nothing to shout about these days, either! Rant over

Come on people,. .. .Manchester Airport must be one of the best run airports in the World. Why else would the local councils that own it allow Geoff Muirhead - the Chief Executive (and Mr Charisma Bypass to his friends) - to increase his salary from £160,000 last year t0 £250,000 this year? Or am I missing something ........?
