Aeroflot sending A330s to Iran for Servicing
For the first time in history, Aeroflot has sent one of its jets to Iran for maintenance work. Technicians at Mahan Air will do the upkeep on an Airbus A330-300. Before the 2022 sanctions, this work was often handled in Hong Kong.

If it's Mahan Air, they are just operating some A343s and A346s.
Never had any A330 in their fleet.
Of course, there is a lot of communality between the various members of the A330/A340 family but it stops at the engine for instance.
If it's Iran Air, they do operate 2 A330s that Airbus managed to deliver in 2017 during the short lull in the sanctions.
So very limited experience on A330 maintenance in both operators ...

One heavily sanctioned airline / nation with a poor safety record going to another heavily sanctioned airline / nation with an even worse safety record to maintain aircraft from which the OEMs have withdrawn support is not necessarily the best starting point for continuing airworthiness and safety.
Do the Iranians have significant experience of struggling along without proper spares and support from the OEMs? Yup, and in the circumstances they've done a remarkable job.
But you would have a hard job convincing me that that makes it safe. You'd have an even harder job to get me on one of their aeroplanes. (I note that Iranian airlines do not serve alcohol IAW sharia law - shame - if ever there was an airline where a good stiff drink before take off was required then that would be it!).
OH
Well, Mahan's "poor" safety record (7 incidents between 2005 and 2023) hasn't killed anyone. Furthermore none, bar arguably one, on a B747, was attributed to maintenance issues. In the same period Iran Air had four incidents and one fatal accident (crew error on a B727 on approaching to land in bad weather). The accident was not due to any maintenance issues. Crew proficiency is one thing, maintenance proficiency is another!

Sure, but we are talking about maintenance. I say again, crew proficiency is another matter.
Absolutely, but not the issue in this thread. Funny how posters quickly go off track. The issue is Aeroflot sending their A330s to Iran for maintenance and a comment by OverHawk which followed that. I replied to that comment. My point is, and remains, that neither Mahan Air nor Iran Air's safety record can be attributed to poor maintenance. Now, if this thread was about would I fly on either Mahan Air, Iran Air or Aeroflot then my answer would be no. But that's another subject.
