Either way releasing a military strategic airlifter to Putain would be irresponsible in the extreme.
It arrived 25-48 hours before the sanctions were bought in, there was enough time for the plane to unload turn around and be out of canada before the sanctions came into effect. Instead the crew just abandoned the aircraft, no who knows why they did is talking,

The grounded Antonov was the subject of a news item this evening, there's a video new item on this Global News page (I can't figure out how to paste a link to that specific news item):

The Canadian Government has seized this aircraft:

A prelude to handing it over to the Ukrainians?

I wonder what condition it is in after all this time sitting on the ground.

Irrespective of the legalities I'm not sure that anyone has currently the capability to make to fly worthy (at least for revenue flights).

Antonov Airlines has a An-124 maintenance facility at Leipzig airport. Not sure about major structural work but enough for engine changes and parting out a donor aircraft.

My understanding is that everyone is very short of those Lotarev D-18 (ie very few spares available). Wouldn't be surprised that this aircraft end up cannibalized "on site"...

A senior Antonov (ADB) instructor pilot has commented a few days ago on his youtube they are most likely to part it out rather than flying it.

can you post a link to the video. I just find it hard to understand why they would dismantle this aircraft as they are in high demand based on all the media hype

While its short-term future may well be as a Christmas tree, that doesn't necessarily mean that the aircraft won't eventually return to service.

Without knowing ADB situation it could be either they feel to have enough aircraft or (more likely) they don’t want to open a can of worms - a good 30% of the world is not aligned or even hostile towards them, which can make operation with this particular airframe difficult.

IIRC, Russia and Ukraine split over An-124 already when Russia started to do maintenance independent of official Ukrainian manufacturer recommendations. It might be Ukraine not considering Russian maintained An-124 airworthy any more. With the Ukrainian fleet being very active and needing spare parts, using it as a donor is a no-brainer.

Apparently, the Russian government is unhappy enough about the Canadian seizure of the An-124, that ambassadors are being summoned to discuss, and threats are being made:
