People are understandably drawn to the fancy technology and it sure has a proper place. It's just that the technology has no place in a piece of living history like this airplane.

When I flew the mighty Douglas DC 6 I used to say I had "glass cockpit" time because if could monitor the engine health on the 6 inch round CRT oscilloscope engine analyzer.
They had wanted to install something like a C-130J cockpit to comply with RVSM airspace requirements.

Yup, I was lucky enough to get in at the very end of the era when the big pistons were still operating. The DC 6 is still my all time favorite airplane

The engine analyser on the Connies was to the left of the FE panel behind the F.O seat as I recall? Never flew theCoonie as an FE as I was not smart enough. I did fly the 1049H as an F/O at FTL. Also flew the DC6B at another airline. Pretty sure I could sill start the R2800 without a backfire

In the days when I used to travel (ie, two months ago) there used to be a Connie on static display - with a DC3 and a JU52 - at Munich airport. Anyone know if it's still there? It appears to be on Google Earth but I've not seen reference to it in this thread.

Yes, they are still there, they are part of the visitor centre with viewing area on the hill, etc.. I am not sure if it is open to the public at this time.
There are 2 kinds of pilots starting R2800's, Those who have had a backfire on start....and those who will.
However I believe the Starliner has the same fuel injected Wright 3350 as the DC7. Those engines were amazingly easy to start. I watch a crew get all 4 going in about 30 seconds.

Lufthansa's Super Star engines including spare had already been perfectly overhauled. They were ready and good to go. The best part of the venture so to say.
