A jihadi aviation update from the BBC:

Australian brothers guilty of IS plane bomb plot

Two men linked to the Islamic State (IS) group have been convicted in Australia of plotting to blow up a flight using a concealed bomb.

Mahmoud Khayat, 34, aimed to bring down the Sydney to Abu Dhabi flight in July 2017, a jury found on Thursday.

His brother, Khaled Khayat, 51, was found guilty of the same offence in May. Both men had pleaded not guilty.

Their plan failed when the bag carrying the bomb could not be checked in at the airport because it was overweight.

Prosecutors said they had aimed to blow up the flight carrying 400 passengers with military grade explosives concealed inside a meat grinder.

After it failed, the brothers also planned to carry out a chemical gas attack in Sydney, prosecutors said. They were arrested 11 days after the airport incident.

A third brother, Amer Khayat, had carried the bag to Sydney Airport but was not part of the plot. Authorities said his brothers had planted the bomb in luggage without his knowledge.

Mahmoud and Khaled Khayat face maximum sentences of life in prison. They will be sentenced at a later date.

To avoid the need to go back through this rather old thread, the brother who carried the bag to the airport, Amer Khayat, is / was yesterday in the process of being released from a ME prison as a, reportedly, unsuspecting dupe.
He actually boarded the flight. He was to be blown up with the other 400 passengers.

A fourth brother was captured and imprisoned for being an active ISIS commander and is now facing the death penalty.
It is thought that he was the driving force behind the plot.

And I thought that my brothers could be a bit harsh at times.

By the way, why do UK passport readers usually not work and other countries do ?
Came back last night through LHR T2,; fairly busy (about 7.25pm), quite long queues in the non-EU Border control. On the other side, very large number of passport readers, all working perfectly as far as could tell, meant that there was NO QUEUE whatsoever to go through, first time I have seen that since 1970. Upshot was that from the airbridge to the bus station took about 10 minutes. So someone is doing something right.

Now back to the thread.

Well over two years in the slammer should at least teach anyone to tick the right box in the "Did you pack your bag yourself?" section on the check-in form next time
