report of commercial pilot suicide in Cessna

No Cookies | Daily Telegraph This newspaper article says: "QANTAS cleared international pilot Paul Whyte to fly one month before police believe he deliberately crashed his light aircraft into the ocean off northern NSW. The Lennox Head man passed a Qantas and CASA medical and mental health check in February even though he had been struggling to deal with a marriage breakdown for nearly a year. Qantas confirmed the father-of-two had flown Boeing 747 aircraft with a capacity of 467 passengers on the Brisbane to Los Angeles route as a first officer in the weeks before his death on Monday" A terrible tragedy that will again focus attention on mental health in pilots.

He just used a light plane on himself instead of a gun or some other means. Tragic as it is, this is an old fashioned suicide and sadly it happens everyday around the globe. Pilots are not immune, nor are doctors or anyone else. He never had any intentions to take any life but his own, cleared to fly or otherwise.

The Germanwings guy was a sick monster. Fortunately monsters like that come once in a blue moon in this profession.

In the time you took to read the last two posts, 2 people killed themselves. 3000 per day. I'm sure the rate among airline pilots is lower than the average per capita.
