There is a substantive difference between screening pax arriving at Security and those passing through the Customs channel.
This may be illustrated by the concept of "stock and flow".
Pax arriving at Security are "stock" i.e. once they have scanned boarding pass there is a ton of information immediately available regarding travel history, payment type, itinerary, passport issuing country, covert flags etc. Therefore there is really no need for the minimum wage operatives to worry about picking out certain physical types from the crowd - which they will doubtless mishandle anyway - and this should be done remotely with pax causing concern tracked by CCTV to the Security line then intensively screened.

As they walk up, they could literally be anyone and Customs officers are entirely in the dark about them (except where known individuals are targetted on the basis of prior intelligence). The officers therefore generally deploy "copper's nose" i.e. a career's worth of experience in judging people who are acting strangely (walking funny, sweating, tucking in etc.) and pull over people who ping their radar.
They have a bit of a crap job standing there in the baggage hall - rummage teams have much more fun :-)

I was referring more to the acceptance, by passengers, of being stopped, questioned and baggage searches yet nobody says this is rascist or discriminatory.

For all of the 90s I flew LAX-FRA-LIN or ONT-ORD-FRA-LIN and return every 3 months. At least 25% of the time at FRA they would ask me to turn on the PC and/or do a swab test. Since the end of 2000 I have been to LIN 3 times. Most recently May. Glad I don't fly regularly anymore.
Most devices these days use a USB style charger. So only one is needed for phone, tablet, e-reader, etc. And they most likely use 110-240 volts AC so they are good worldwide. All that is needed is a plug style adapter. PC generally bricks use the same AC voltage range so only need style adapters.
Anyone who travels internationally and does not carry their power supplies and style adapters for every country they traverse in carryon should be seated in the rear lavs.

And Some NEW Thing about Water?
It seems that a couple of airlines out of HK are limiting basic water to the U.S. And Aus. No reasons given. Anyone know why. Long flights, H2O is necessary and who wants to drink the on-board 'potable?' Any ideas?

As I commented earlier, obviously the sec authorities are concentrating on the flying public, but where are they NOT looking?
Then I find my thread re the recent security breach @ BHX is now mysteriously missing.
Must have been top secret info to make it as far as the BBC website...?
